Job Description

Duties

  • Verifies proper patient preparation for tests requested by the provider, e.g., fasting, special diet, medications, etc., as well as appropriate sample collection procedure and sample transport requirements.
  • Collects blood samples from inpatients, outpatients, and emergency room patients using aseptic techniques.
  • Observes the patient for any signs or symptoms of physiological reactions after blood collection and takes appropriate emergency response measures to prevent injury and stabilize the patient.
  • Accurately labels the blood samples.
  • Prepares samples for transportation to off-site testing facilities, if necessary.
  • Alerts supervisor when serious reactions or emergency conditions exist.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Phlebotomy Certification.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds may be required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with laboratory tests and support AND six months of specialized experience which includes performing tests, procedures, and related support work such as shipping specimens and calibrating laboratory instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Education and Training: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; OR (b) 1 year of education above the high school level that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; OR (c) 2 years of education above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
