Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which which includes assembling surgical equipment and instruments in the operating room; preparing equipment and supplies for patients undergoing surgical procedures; sterilizing instruments for the surgical room; and maintaining a sterile operating room for surgery. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education : One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surgery.

Combination of Education and Experience : Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Additional information
- Transport patients from hospital units to the Operating Room assuring safe transportation of the patient.
- Screen patient prior to transport to ensure per-operative medications have been given, jewelry, dentures and any prosthetic devices have been removed.
- Position or assist positioning patient and draping the patient for the specific procedure. Secures patient as required.
- Follow pre-operative nursing care plan in preparing patient and Operating Room.
- Scrub technician, select, assemble, and organize required supplies, equipment, and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference cards and/or conferring with physicians or charge nurse.
- Hand instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
- Maintain alertness for complications developing during surgery such as hemorrhage, shock and cardiac arrest and immediately supplies instruments, drugs, and supplies to correct the condition.
- As a circulator, obtains sterile supplies, sutures, dressings, linens, etc., for the specific procedure.
- Assist anesthetist during induction and throughout surgical procedure.
- Obtain supplies needed during surgery such as blood, drugs, solutions, instruments, and additional sterile supplies.
- Prepare specimens for laboratory; properly labels specimens; takes specimens to the laboratory; records designated data on patient log, documents appropriate information in intraoperative nursing record.
- Clean operating room after surgery, removes and disposes of soiled and/or contaminated materials; changes linen; washes, disassembles, sterilizes, and reassembles instruments.

- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
