Job Description

Engineering Tech Writer

Location: Elkridge, MD - Onsite
Pay: $54.50/hr W2 OR $65/hr 1099
Contract: 12 months

Overview
Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking Engineering Writers to support the development of engineering and technical documentation for advanced military systems, including radar, sensor, UAV, and aircraft platform programs supporting systems such as F-22, F-35, Joint Strike Fighter, F-16, B-1B, MESA, G/ATOR, and VADER.

This role is focused on true engineering/technical writing for military systems documentation. Candidates should have an engineering, military operations/maintenance, radar, sensor, communications, electro-optics, networks, or IT-based systems background.

No grant writers, government proposal writers, or general government technical writers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Write, rewrite, and edit engineering and technical documentation
  • Develop technical procedure manuals, test requirement documents, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related publications
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to a wide range of audiences
  • Oversee preparation of illustrative materials including drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts
  • Conduct quality reviews of technical materials
  • Publish materials in multiple formats including page-based, electronic, interactive, HTML, XML, and SGML
  • Collaborate with task leads, engineers, writers, and instructors to develop sensor/system technical manuals
  • Perform desktop publishing tasks for reports, whitepapers, articles, and related documents
  • Research and compile information from program documents and engineering sources
  • Develop manual outlines and ensure compliance with military/civilian specifications and standards

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM discipline or related field
    OR military operations and maintenance experience with radar, communications, electro-optics, networks, or IT-based sensors/systems
  • Engineering background or equivalent military background
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and team-oriented
  • Must possess and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of engineering writing experience
  • 2+ years of experience with structured authoring tools such as:
    • Arbortext
    • MadCap Flare
    • FrameMaker
  • Knowledge of Simplified Technical English / ASD-STE100
  • Knowledge of XML, SGML, HTML, S1000D, and DITA standards
  • Experience developing technical manuals for military, radar, sensor, aerospace, defense, or complex engineering systems
