The ideal candidate brings hands-on laboratory experience, familiarity with hazardous materials handling, and the ability to perform a wide variety of complex tasks with a high degree of creativity and latitude. This position plays a key role in supporting division objectives through effective sample management, chemical inventory control, and general laboratory operations.

The Laboratory Technician will provide broad operational and technical support to the Safety and Environmental Branch, performing a variety of complicated laboratory and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will rely on their experience and training to plan and accomplish goals with a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Receive, verify preservation of, and accurately document samples received in the laboratory in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
- Maintain chemical inventory control, ensuring accurate records of all chemicals and materials within the laboratory environment.
- Conduct and transport samples of wastes and materials as required, adhering to all applicable safety, regulatory, and handling requirements.
- Perform general laboratory housekeeping duties, including cleaning, paper shredding, recycling, and laundering of lab coats, to maintain a safe and organized work environment.
- Support Safety and Environmental Branch related tasking as required to achieve division objectives, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability across a range of assignments.
- Apply familiarity with facility and building management concepts, practices, and procedures to support day-to-day laboratory and branch operations.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to laboratory activities, sample management, and chemical inventories.
- Assist with daily office and administrative tasks such as filing, recording, and maintaining records as needed.
- Rely on experience and training to independently plan and accomplish goals, bringing creativity and sound judgment to complex and varied tasks.
Education and Experience:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience with laboratory procedures/protocols or hazardous material handling, OR an Associate's degree with 1-2 years of related experience, OR a Bachelor's degree in a life science or physical science field.
Desired:
- Bachelor's degree in a life science or physical science discipline is desirable.
- Experience with daily office tasks such as filing, recording, maintaining records, and other similar administrative duties is desirable.
- Prior experience working in a laboratory, environmental, or safety-related environment is highly desirable.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Working knowledge of laboratory procedures, protocols, and safe handling practices for hazardous materials.
- Ability to receive, verify, and accurately document laboratory samples and maintain detailed chain-of-custody records.
- Competency in maintaining chemical inventory control and associated documentation.
- Ability to safely conduct and transport waste and material samples in compliance with applicable regulations and safety requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all laboratory and documentation tasks.
- Ability to perform general laboratory housekeeping and maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
- Familiarity with facility and building management concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to rely on experience and training to plan and independently accomplish goals with creativity and latitude.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills sufficient to document findings, maintain records, and interact with team members and leadership.
Clearance Requirement:
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance
Desired Skills and Competencies:
- Prior experience in a Safety and Environmental Branch or similar Navy/military environment.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance and hazardous waste management regulations (e.g., RCRA, CERCLA, or equivalent Navy/DOD standards).
- Experience with sample collection, preservation techniques, and chain-of-custody documentation.
- Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) for record keeping, reporting, and correspondence.
- Experience with administrative and records management tasks including filing, data entry, and document control.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Familiarity with Navy or other military branch environmental and safety programs is a plus.
- Professional certifications related to hazardous materials handling or laboratory safety (e.g., HAZWOPER 40-Hour, DOT Hazmat) are a plus.
