Safety and Occupational Health Specialist

Duties

• Conduct Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Program inspections and mishap investigations for the medical, dental, and medical support facilities.
• Responsible for the implementation of programs based on established national safety standards, including other applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
• Provides guidance on educational programs related to safety for Medical Treatment Facility Staff and other support activities in the command.
• Support Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) Program policies, regulation, instructions and standards. Create, educate, and conduct SOH training.
• Assist, address, and provide guidance to staff's Safety and Occupational Health (SOH) concerns.

• This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting workplace inspections for compliance with established safety and occupational health standards in a healthcare or dental facility; conducting investigations of incidents involving workplace safety; and developing safety and occupational health programs, policies, or procedures for healthcare or dental facilities in accordance with government regulatory guidance.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
