Job Description
ClearanceJobs is actively seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer for our client located in Herndon, VA. ClearanceJobs is the largest career network for professionals with federal government security clearances, connecting cleared talent with the opportunities that matter most. We are committed to matching top-tier candidates with clients who depend on mission-focused professionals to support national security, defense, and intelligence community initiatives. Our team works closely with hiring managers to understand their needs and deliver candidates who are not only technically qualified but cleared and ready to contribute from day one.
Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
Own DevOps operations across Linux/Unix-based mission research environments, including system administration, patching, hardening, and configuration management from end to end.
Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI, Git, SVN, and CVS; write and maintain automation scripts in Python, Perl, Bash, and Korn shell.
Lead or independently execute initial deployments and site stand-ups for a multi-level secure enterprise system, coordinating across engineering, site staff, and program teams.
Partner with scientists, developers, and mission users to optimize workflows, port applications, and resolve performance bottlenecks to accelerate time-to-science.
Develop and sustain DevOps processes for provisioning, configuration management, and long-term system sustainment in classified environments.
Produce and maintain technical documentation including deployment procedures, system runbooks, and user support materials.
Minimum Qualifications:
8–10+ years of hands-on experience in Linux/Unix administration, scripting, and configuration management in enterprise or mission-critical environments.
Demonstrated ownership of production Linux systems — not rotational exposure; candidates should have served as the primary administrator or lead engineer on operational environments.
Expert-level proficiency in Python, Perl, Bash, Korn shell, and Ansible.
Proven experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Git, SVN, CVS) in secure or classified environments.
Hands-on DevOps automation experience with a track record of building and sustaining infrastructure independently.
CompTIA Security+ certification required.
Strong troubleshooting skills and demonstrated experience supporting highly technical end users.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting HPC environments, scientific computing, or performance optimization (MPI, OpenMP, GPU acceleration, job schedulers such as Slurm, PBS Pro, or LSF).
Background with multi-level security systems or similar classified enterprise deployments.
Linux hardening and security compliance experience (STIGs, RMF, SCAP).
Containerization or orchestration experience (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
Infrastructure-as-Code or advanced automation tooling (Terraform, Packer, Puppet, Chef).
Prior experience in IC or DoD R&D or operational mission environments.
Clearance Requirements:
Active TS/SCI with CI Polygraph required at time of application; no sponsorship available.
Must maintain eligibility for access to classified information throughout the duration of employment.
Location:
Herndon, VA
On-site; no remote or hybrid option available.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, operate standard office equipment such as a computer, keyboard, and telephone, and occasionally move about the work environment. Must be able to communicate in writing and verbally with sufficient clarity to convey technical information. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
