Job Description

Duties

  • Conducts investigations to apprehend and/or detain persons committing crimes against persons and property.
  • Analyzes data to identify suspects and develop case information for use in pressing charges and bringing suspects to trial.
  • Appears as a witness or testifies at trials, hearings, courts martial and other federal judiciary proceedings regarding results of investigations.
  • Performs surveillance of suspects, crime scenes, and suspected or potential criminal activities.
  • Interviews witnesses, suspects, and victims, and obtains statements containing information concerning the incident.
  • Develops information on suspects concerning their habits, associates, characteristics, aliases, and other personal information and uses such information in the investigative process.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Successfully graduated from the USAMPS Military Police Investigator Course or complete within one year of hire date.
  • Successfully graduated from the United States Army Civilian Police Academy or graduate within a one year of hire date, unless incumbent has a current approved waiver/exemption or grandfathered from the Office of the Provost Marshal General.
  • Incumbent must be able to successfully pass training, certification and qualification requirements related to law enforcement work functions as prescribed by policy, regulations or statutes. These include, but not limited to: weapons qualifications.
  • Incumbent must be able to successfully pass training requirements related to law enforcement work functions as prescribed by policy, regulations or statutes. These include, but not limited to: National Incident Management System training requirements
  • Certifications for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) /first aid techniques.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment and recurring medical evaluation. This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program.
  • Pass a Physical Agility Test (PAT) within 30 days of hire date and annually thereafter.
  • Comply with and maintain the requirements of the Individual Reliability Program (IRP).
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • Subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license and be able to obtain and maintain a government motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Hours of work is subject to irregular and/or rotating shifts, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbent is required to work overtime as directed and is subject to recall for emergency overtime.
  • Official Temporary Duty (TDY) may be required occasionally.
  • Incumbent is subject to possible civil and criminal action due to improper exercises of authority or injudicious use of force in the apprehension or detention of individuals.
  • This position is designated as KEY position. Incumbent is subject to screening for Ready Reserve. Cannot be a member of the Selected Reserve, Individual Ready Reserve or Inactive National Guard.
  • Civilians in key positions must be exempt from recall to active duty because of Reserve or retired military obligation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which 1) Applying law enforcement investigative procedures and techniques to investigate crimes; 2) Responding to crime scenes to collect and preserve evidence; and 3) Analyzing investigative facts to develop criminal cases. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
