Description
The UNIX LINUX Engineer - SME provides senior technical leadership for UNIX/Linux enterprise infrastructure operations supporting the SEC ISS contract, including HALSI UNIX/Linux support activities. This role leads administrative staff responsible for availability, performance, and reliability of production server environments. The position coordinates integrated operations with Windows Server, Active Directory, and SQL Server teams to ensure stable cross-platform services and rapid incident resolution. The SME is accountable for operational excellence, secure administration, and documentation aligned to SEC service delivery and change control expectations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
UNIX/LINUX Infrastructure Leadership
- Lead and manage the administrative team responsible for UNIX/Linux server infrastructure operations.
- Plan and manage workloads, project assignments, and operational priorities across the server administration team.
- Provide senior escalation support for complex UNIX/Linux system issues and restoration activities.
- Maintain and improve operational runbooks, standard operating procedures, and administrative standards.
Cross-Platform Server Operations
- Provide leadership and oversight for Active Directory and SQL Server activities that interface with UNIX/Linux services.
- Plan and manage workloads, projects, and other administrative tasks associated with the Windows Server team.
- Provide subject matter expertise in troubleshooting Windows server infrastructure issues impacting enterprise services.
- Ensure cross-platform account, access, and configuration dependencies are managed and documented.
Incident Response and Service Delivery
- Direct monitoring, triage, and escalation activities to maintain server health, performance, and availability.
- Lead response for high-priority incidents, including technical coordination and stakeholder communication.
- Ensure ticket quality, documentation accuracy, and timely updates in established service management workflows.
- Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions to reduce recurring incidents and improve service stability.
Security, Compliance, and Operational Governance
- Support secure configuration and patching practices across UNIX/Linux systems.
- Enforce change control and administrative governance practices consistent with SEC policies.
- Support audit readiness through accurate documentation of operational changes.
- Drive continuous improvement in reliability, process discipline, and team operational maturity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- This position is restricted to U.S. citizens only. Applicants must not hold dual citizenship with any other country to be eligible for work under this contract.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering). In lieu of degree, additional experience may be required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain SEC Public Trust.
- Must have a minimum of 12 years of experience administrating and managing servers and systems, specializing in UNIX/LINUX operating systems.
- Must have experience leading technical team supporting system operations.
- Must possess a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification or equivalent.
- Experience providing leadership and oversight for Active Directory, SQL Server, and Windows Server administrative activities.
- UNIX/Linux server and system administration in enterprise environments.
- Technical team leadership supporting system operations.
- Active Directory and SQL Server operational oversight in cross-platform environments.
- Windows Server team coordination for administrative workloads, projects, and support activities.
- Subject matter expertise troubleshooting issues related to Windows server infrastructure.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting federal enterprise IT environments under FISMA/NIST-aligned security and compliance requirements.
- Experience providing UNIX/Linux support for high-performance or analytics-focused computing environments.
- Experience in 24x7x365 operations, major incident management, and service restoration leadership.
- Experience with ServiceNow-based ticketing workflows and operational reporting.
- Experience with hybrid infrastructure (on-prem and cloud) and automation tooling for server administration.
