Join Our Team as a Platform Engineer (REMOTE) at Zachary Piper Solutions!
As a Platform Engineer, you will support a mission-driven team focused on accelerating scientific discovery for a government customer by building and maintaining secure, scalable cloud infrastructure. You will design and operate AWS GovCloud environments, implement container orchestration strategies, and enable rapid, compliant software delivery through modern DevOps practices.
Responsibilities
· Design and deploy secure AWS GovCloud infrastructure, including VPCs, subnetting strategies, security groups, IAM roles, and network controls.
· Build, optimize, and maintain Docker containers for Python Fast API backend services, improving portability and deployment consistency.
· Implement ECS/Fargate-based container orchestration, enabling scalable, highly available services with auto-scaling policies.
· Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and/or CloudFormation to standardize and version cloud environments.
· Engineer CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and AWS CodePipeline to automate build, test, and deployment workflows.
· Configure Application Load Balancers, SSL/TLS certificates, and Route 53 DNS, ensuring secure and reliable traffic routing.
· Implement secrets management with AWS Secrets Manager, enhancing application security and credential lifecycle management.
· Establish security controls aligned with government compliance requirements, including least privilege IAM and network isolation.
· Design and implement observability solutions using AWS CloudWatch for monitoring, centralized logging, and proactive alerting.
· Author deployment documentation and operational runbooks, improving team efficiency and incident response readiness.
· Collaborate closely with backend developers to optimize containerized application performance, deployment processes, and scalability.
Required Qualifications
· 5-8 years of experience in Cloud Engineering, DevOps, or Platform Engineering roles
· Proven track record of building secure, scalable infrastructure for data-intensive and mission-critical applications
· Hands-on experience with AWS GovCloud (or Azure Government) environments
· Strong understanding of FedRAMP Medium/High and DoD IL4/IL5 compliance requirements
· Deep familiarity with NIST SP 800-53 security controls and implementation practices
· Expert-level proficiency in Terraform/OpenTofu
· Ability to design and maintain reusable, modular Terraform codebases
Preferred / Bonus Qualifications
· Experience bridging National Lab Supercomputers to cloud environments
· Modular Terraform providers for Databricks Workspace automation
· Transit gateway architectures for data egress/ingress optimization
· Kubernetes or other container orchestration platforms
· Python (for scripting and tooling)
· Databricks integration and deployment
· Fast API or similar Python web frameworks
· DNS resolution in hybrid environments
· Cost optimization (FinOps) for data-intensive workloads
· Monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus)
