Job Description

Job Description
Everforth ECS is seeking a Senior Systems/Application Support Engineer to support a mission-critical, client-server software application in our Stafford, VA office.

We are seeking a highly capable and experienced engineer to provide advanced application operations, server-side administration, production infrastructure support, deployment/site readiness support, configuration alignment, troubleshooting, and future cloud-migration support for a custom Windows-based client-server application. This role is responsible for maintaining production application environments, supporting production infrastructure and network alignment, validating application and site configurations, diagnosing complex incidents across application, database, server, network, security, and integration layers, and helping prepare the program for future transition to cloud or hybrid-cloud environments.

The Senior Systems/Application Support Engineer will serve as a technical escalation point for complex production and site-support issues. The role will support incident response, environment and configuration validation, production readiness, operational documentation, deployment coordination, and post-deployment/site stabilization. The engineer will partner closely with product owners, developers, DBAs, cybersecurity, networking, infrastructure, field/site support teams, and cloud engineering teams to ensure application reliability, secure operations, and consistent configuration across supported sites.

This position also supports the Application Support Manager by improving operational processes, monitoring system health, analyzing incident and ticket trends, mentoring junior staff, and helping ensure adherence to SLAs, security requirements, change-control practices, migration-readiness expectations, and performance metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Provide senior-level operational and technical support for a custom Windows-based client-server application, including server-side administration, production infrastructure support, configuration alignment, site support, and production troubleshooting.
  • Administer, monitor, and troubleshoot production application environments, including Windows servers, Windows services, scheduled tasks, service accounts, permissions, application configurations, logs, Event Viewer, operating-system dependencies, and related server-side resources.
  • Support production deployment and site-readiness activities by coordinating infrastructure, network, security, database, and application configuration alignment before, during, and after implementation.
  • Lead complex incident investigation, root cause analysis, escalation management, and major incident response across application, database, server, network, security, integration, and site-specific domains.
  • Perform SQL-driven diagnostics and collaborate with DBAs to validate data integrity, investigate performance issues, reconcile data against requirements and logs, and support query, indexing, or schema-related analysis.
  • Configure, validate, and troubleshoot application, infrastructure, and site-specific settings under formal change control, including permissions, tenant/client parameters, service parameters, integrations, firewall rules, DNS, certificates, service accounts, and security-related configurations.
  • Monitor application health, service availability, server performance, logs, telemetry, and reliability trends; recommend and implement proactive checks, automation, alerting, dashboards, and observability improvements to reduce repeat incidents and shorten MTTR.
  • Coordinate with infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, database, engineering, cloud, and site-support teams on production dependencies, operational stabilization, future cloud migration readiness, and post-migration support.
  • Support future transition to cloud or hybrid-cloud environments through discovery, dependency mapping, infrastructure and network readiness, configuration documentation, operational process updates, troubleshooting, and post-migration stabilization.
  • Maintain accurate incident, configuration, operational, and knowledge documentation, including runbooks, SOPs, troubleshooting guides, site-readiness notes, production configuration references, cloud-readiness materials, and root cause analyses.
  • Partner across Agile and operational teams to refine supportability considerations, production readiness, nonfunctional requirements, site requirements, change implementation planning, and operational handoff.
  • Mentor junior analysts and support engineers on troubleshooting methods, documentation standards, escalation hygiene, communication practices, and operational best practices.
  • Provide customer-facing technical support and clear communications to users, site personnel, and stakeholders, including incident status, workarounds, resolution plans, training materials, issue trends, mitigation strategies, and post-incident actions.
  • Uphold data protection, access control, auditability, records-handling, and security practices appropriate to law enforcement and criminal justice systems across support, deployment, site operations, migration, and production activities.

Salary Range: $110,000-$120,000

Required Skills
  • Active Top Secret clearance.
  • Ability to provide onsite support Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.
  • Ability to travel 5-10% of the time, both within the United States and internationally.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field. Advanced degrees are welcome for candidates with specialized focus in systems, databases, cybersecurity, cloud, or application operations.
  • 6+ years of experience in systems engineering, application operations, production support, application administration, systems analysis, site support, or a similar technical role supporting complex client-server or enterprise applications.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Windows-based production application environments, including Windows Server, Windows services, application configuration, server logs, Event Viewer, service accounts, permissions, environment dependencies, and Windows update processes such as WSUS.
  • Experience supporting production deployment, site readiness, implementation support, configuration alignment, post-deployment stabilization, and change-control processes.
  • Deep understanding of complex application workflows and client-server interactions, including how front-end behavior, backend services, integrations, databases, security controls, network dependencies, and infrastructure configurations affect system performance and availability.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, TLS, ports, routing basics, and firewall concepts such as rules, ACLs, source/destination scoping, and least-privilege access.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across application, server, database, network, integration, configuration, access control, site connectivity, and security boundaries.
  • Working knowledge of cloud or hybrid-cloud concepts, including cloud-hosted applications, virtual machines, networking, storage, identity and access, monitoring, backup/restore, and migration-readiness considerations.
  • Proven experience with incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, documentation rigor, change control, and metrics-based operational improvement, including MTTR reduction and repeat-incident prevention.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical issues clearly to technical teams, users, site personnel, and mission-focused stakeholders.
  • Experience working within Agile and operational support teams, including participation in planning, reviews, backlog refinement, release or change-readiness discussions, retrospectives, and operational coordination.

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with AWS, Azure, GovCloud, or other government-authorized cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud networking concepts, including VPCs/VNets, subnets, routing, security groups, network security groups, load balancers, private endpoints, VPNs, DNS, TLS, and proxy behavior.
  • Familiarity with cloud identity and access concepts, including IAM roles, managed identities, service principals, least-privilege access, privileged access controls, and audit logging.
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code, configuration management, or deployment automation tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM/Bicep, Ansible, PowerShell, or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with monitoring, observability, alerting, logging, or telemetry tools used to track application health, service availability, performance trends, site health, and incident patterns.
  • ITIL Foundation certification or demonstrated experience with incident, problem, change, release, and configuration management practices.
  • Experience with enterprise antivirus configuration and tuning to prevent interference with application processes, including path, extension, process, and service exclusions.
  • Experience implementing, validating, and periodically testing backup and restore configurations for application data, logs, configuration files, and supporting system components.
  • Hands-on experience supporting secure integrations, APIs, file exchanges, or data interfaces among law enforcement, justice, public safety, or other regulated systems.
  • Familiarity with auditability, evidentiary records, secure data exchanges, and records-handling considerations in law enforcement, criminal justice, public safety, or similarly regulated environments.
