Job Description
We have an opening for a Target Fabrication Production Manager within our National Ignition Facility (NIF). NIF is the world's most powerful and energetic laser. You will be responsible for managing the team that is involved with the timely production of NIF and OMEGA targets at LLNL. You will be responsible for the various aspects of scheduling and workflow for delivery of laser targets. You will deliver quality targets on-time for the NIF and other facilities. You will work with the Master Scheduler to develop assembly and metrology schedules in support of on-time delivery of laser targets. You will lead a team of assemblers and support staff across multiple assembly locations. You will assign production resources, track production metrics, and propose process improvements. This role will be in the Target Fabrication Program, within the NIF & Photon (NIF&PS) Science Directorate. This position resides in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate and directly supports the NIF & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will
- Lead teams, programs, or functions with a technical focus, operate under consultative direction with substantial authority, use subject matter expertise and significant team leadership experience, and exercise judgment within established policies to monitor workflow, allocate resources, ensure timely completion of projects, independently determine strategies, and achieve objectives while managing organizational impact and pursuing actions to achieve long-term goals.
- Oversee and manage the target fabrication production team involved with timely production of 300+ NIF targets and 900+ Omega targets per year, while interacting and collaborating with Target Fabrication Program Manager and Physics partners to establish priorities.
- Provide leadership and technical oversight to the master scheduler to develop and maintain high-level schedule for entire Target Fabrication assembly effort, managing production resources to execute the assembly schedule.
- Work with the Engineering team to ensure proper maintenance of the various target factories by establishing objectives and priorities while working with target fabrication and institutional facility managers.
- Establish and track production metrics (yield, schedule, target production effort), identify issues, and develop and implement solutions and present status of production to senior management and stakeholders.
- Track and communicate component issues and their impact on production to the component engineering group.
- Participate in hiring process and oversee the training plans for the assembler workforce with attention to current and future needs.
- Provide leadership and management of the assembly team.
- Develop and implement training plans for the production team.
- Work with the Process Engineering group to implement new processes and assembly/process improvements, as well as propose new process improvements.
- Act as point of contact with the NIF facility for target related issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Significant experience interacting, directing, leading, and advising all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors including oversight of project schedules and resources.
- Expert verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively lead, present, and advise teams and present and explain technical information and provide advice to senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Ability to multitask and oversee several operations at a time and lead through leaders as needed.
- Extensive organizational and time management skills.
- Extensive experience with goal orientation and methodical use of strategies to meet production deadlines, identify issues, and make recommendations for process improvements.

- Master's degree in Science or Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Significant experience assessing future needs and developing strategies in a fast-paced production or manufacturing environment.
- Substantial experience interacting, directing, leading, and advising all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors including oversight of highly complex and unique project schedules and resources.
