Northrop Grumman is currently seeking a Director of Systems Engineering and Integration and Test Engineering (SEIT) for our Armament Systems Business Unit located in Plymouth, MN.

Armament system is world leading supplier of many defense products such medium caliber ammunition and guns, large caliber tank ammunition, the projectile guidance kit for artillery ammunition, terrain shaping obstacles, proximity ammunition for defeating unmanned aerial systems, and much more.

Position Overview

The Director of Systems Engineering and Integration and Test (SEIT)provides leadership to the SEIT department, which is responsible for the Systems Engineering and Integration in support of design and development activities of Armament Systems business unit products. The domains within this department include:
  • Systems Engineering and Configuration/Data Management (CM/DM)
  • Specialty Engineering (Safety, reliability, cost, Supportability, Integrated Logistics Support)
  • Software development and testing
  • System Test Planning and Execution
  • Flight Science and Integration (GNC, Aero, HWIL/PIL, Modeling & Simulation)
  • Prototype Development Center (PDC) build and test laboratory operation/execution


The person in this role is accountable for the SEIT aspects of our product in development, staff planning, and the overhead costs of the department. The Director of SEIT is responsible for enabling product development through efficient processes, domain technical expertise, timely decision making, personnel development, knowledge transfer to sustain needed expertise, effective resource management and embracing a continuous improvement philosophy.

Responsibilities for the Director of SEIT
  • Provide overall leadership and technical direction to a broad-based engineering organization in all Armament Systems product lines
  • Support and motivate a high-performing engineering team in the areas of SE, SW, GNC, Aero, specialty engineering and prototyping/integration, and system test, and in continuously improving supporting processes
  • Serve as an independent technical reviewer at System Engineering Technical Reviews (SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR and Test Readiness Reviews)
  • Assess and improve processes, tools, documentation and management techniques to maximize SEIT team execution excellence and quality in partnership with other facets of the Engineering and Operations organization
  • Ensure hiring plans and staff development needs are aligned with supported program need and achieve performance goals
  • Support technology growth in innovation identification, technical roadmap development, and proposal preparation
  • Promote and set high standards for quality and safety
  • Manage department budgets and other resources to effectively meet business goals
  • Maintain knowledge of engineering best practices and specific engineering skills
  • Serve as a role model supporting Northrop Grumman mission and values.
  • Representation and communication of Armament Systems technical capabilities and technologies to external customers and suppliers and other Northrop Grumman organizations.
  • Support Armament Systems initiatives and lead continuous improvement activities within the overall engineering department.
  • Review and approve cost estimates and written technical proposals.
  • Maintains Armament System's system engineering processes and drives technical excellence by ensuring department output meets technical standards.
  • PDC capital equipment and project identification/execution
  • Represent ASBU Engineering in Division and Sector initiatives and champion implementation.


Requirements for the Director of SEIT
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited University in a relevant engineering or STEM field; MS Engineering desirable
  • Minimum of 15 years experience in system engineering and product development projects and sustainment of legacy programs for complex aerospace or defense systems.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading teams and developing a high performing staff, including performance and compensation management, proven mentoring and coaching skills.
  • Strong understanding of how product designs must comply with performance requirements with margins, meet cost goals and be producible in volume
  • Experience with systems engineering processes and other specialty engineering activities within the product development process
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving results through understanding and management of internal customer relationships, prioritization, and delegation of tasks.
  • Experience with the operations of upstream process inputs (Lead System Integrators, Business Development, Contracts, Pricing, Program Management, Project Engineering, and Systems Engineering)
  • Experience with the operations of downstream process customers (both internal and external: Modeling & Simulation, Configuration Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Assembly, Test, System Verification & Validation, Integrated Logistics Support, and End User)
  • Experience with coaching, developing talent, and maintaining the accountability of direct reports.
  • Demonstrated experience with presenting complex technical concepts to audiences with a broad range of technical experience.
  • Position may require travel (less than 20%)
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a DOD security clearance to a level of secret


Primary Level Salary Range: $194,600.00 - $292,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
