Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to own the frontend craft and user experience of our maritime acoustic data platform. This role is a hybrid of advanced frontend engineering and systems-level product design, built for a senior individual contributor who can build data-dense interfaces deployed to U.S. submarines and maritime environments.
Primary Responsibilities
•Design and implement complex, data-rich surfaces on the maritime acoustic platform, driving features from initial sketch to production.
•Evolve the enterprise design system and component library, upholding organization-wide standards for accessibility, type safety, performance, and API design.
•Translate ambiguous mission requirements into concrete UI directions, pairing tightly with Product, full-stack engineers, and operational stakeholders to navigate technical trade-offs.
•Set the engineering craft bar through meticulous pull request reviews, design audits, and continuous mentorship of cross-functional team members.
•Champion application performance and accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA) as first-class architectural concerns rather than design afterthoughts.
•Build data-dense interfaces, optimizing complex charts, real-time displays, and tables to reduce cognitive load for fleet operators under pressure.
Required Experience
•7+ years of Frontend or Design Engineering experience, operating at a senior or staff individual contributor level on a high-bar product team.
•Proven track record of substantially shaping, maintaining, and scaling component libraries and design token architectures utilized by multiple teams.
•Mastery of React, Next.js, TypeScript, and modern engineering workflows (monorepos, CI/CD, and GitHub Actions).
•Expert-level fluency with Tailwind CSS, advanced CSS specs (container queries, OKLCH, view transitions), and Figma component architecture.
•Deep understanding of Core Web Vitals, bundle size reduction, render cost optimization, and perceived performance.
Preferred Experience
•Experience with geospatial visualization tools such as Mapbox, MapLibre, deck.gl, or Cesium.
•Prior experience shipping software within highly regulated or secure domains (e.g., defense, finance, or aerospace).
•Proven capability in building high-frequency, real-time visual displays for hardware or sensor-generated datasets.
