Senior Wireless Engineer (SME)
Location:
- The Wireless Engineer can sit out of any naval installation. However, Pearl Harbor (HI), San Diego (CA), and Norfolk (VA) are the preferred locations.
Clearance Required: Active Secret (will upgrade to Top-Secret)
Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Wireless Engineer (SME) to support enterprise‑level wireless (Wi‑Fi) services within a large-scale Department of Defense (DoD) environment. This is a high-impact, mission-critical role focused on ensuring the performance, reliability, and security of wireless networks across geographically distributed locations.
This position operates within a modern engineering model and serves as the top escalation point (Tier III) for complex wireless issues, while also contributing to network design, optimization, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Do:
- Act as a Tier III escalation point for complex wireless issues (connectivity, roaming, authentication, performance).
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and drive long-term fixes for recurring problems.
- Design, configure, and optimize enterprise wireless networks across multiple sites.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting using:
- Packet captures and client session analysis
- RF spectrum analysis and performance data
- Lead RF design and optimization, including channel planning, interference mitigation, and high-density tuning.
- Implement and maintain secure wireless solutions (802.1X, WPA3, network access control)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate wireless with:
- Wired networks, routing, and firewalls
- Identity and authentication systems
- Support monitoring, observability, and operational improvements
- Lead and support upgrades, deployments, and maintenance activities
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership
Required Qualifications:
- Active Secret clearance (must be eligible for Top Secret)
- DoD 8570 IAT Level III certification (e.g., CISSP, CASP, CCNP Security)
- 8+ years of experience in enterprise networking, including 5+ years focused on wireless
- Strong hands-on experience with enterprise wireless platforms (Aruba or equivalent)
Expertise in:
- Wireless troubleshooting and performance optimization
- Client connectivity and roaming issues
Advanced knowledge of:
802.11 wireless standards (a/b/g/n/ac/ax)
RF fundamentals (signal propagation, interference, channel planning)
Experience with:
- 802.1X authentication, WPA2/WPA3
- RADIUS-based systems
- Supporting large, multi-site enterprise environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Aruba experience (Controllers, Central, AirWave, Mobility Conductors)
- Aruba certifications (ACMP, ACMX, etc.)
- Experience with network access control solutions (e.g., ClearPass)
- Wireless site survey tools (Ekahau, AirMagnet)
- Familiarity with automation tools (Python, Ansible)
- Experience with DoD networks or similar secure environments
- Exposure to multi-vendor wireless (Cisco, Juniper Mist, Ruckus)
