Job Description
TEKsystems is seeking an IP Engineer II to support large-scale network engineering and sustainment efforts within a complex Wide Area Network (WAN) environment. This role focuses on the design, implementation, integration, and ongoing support of network changes while ensuring high availability, performance, and reliability. The engineer will perform planning, analytical research, and design development activities to align network solutions with customer specifications and industry standards, maintaining 99% or greater system uptime and connectivity.
The IP Engineer II will be responsible for controlling and optimizing network systems, mitigating technical and operational risks, managing cost and schedule impacts, and supporting large, integrated network projects. The role includes hands-on hardware and software design, configuration, troubleshooting, and implementation across Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies. The engineer will work on-site with a collaborative team, handling escalated network issues and supporting new installs and infrastructure projects critical to delivering secure and reliable network services.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must have a minimum of 4+ years of networking experience, strong command-line proficiency, and a solid understanding of how routers and switches operate. An active DoD Secret security clearance is required, along with a DoD 8750 IAT Level II certification such as Security+ CE. A bachelor’s degree with 2–4 years of relevant experience, a master’s degree with less than 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
Required technical experience includes VLANs, routing, IP addressing and subnetting, ports and protocols, and troubleshooting IP networks using routing methods such as BGP, OSPF, ISIS, or static routing. Candidates must have experience working in either service provider or enterprise IP network environments using Cisco (ESR/ASR) and/or Juniper routers. Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls, F5 appliances, and Splunk systems is also required.
Preferred and Additional Skills
Preferred qualifications include CCNA certification and MPLS experience, with opportunities to further develop ISP-side networking skills on the job. Candidates who are equally proficient in Cisco and Juniper configuration, troubleshooting, and design are highly desired, including experience with Cisco IOS, IOS XR, and JunOS. Additional valued skills include IPSEC, MPLS, IPv6, crypto technologies, Layer 2/3 VPNs, firewall technologies, and physical cable plant and wiring.
Scripting experience (such as Perl or similar languages) for configuration backups and data extraction from network devices is a plus, as is knowledge of DDoS threats and modern network attack vectors. Vendor certifications, especially from Cisco, are strongly preferred. The role requires excellent technical, project management, communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills, as well as familiarity with DoD regulations and directives.
Employee Value Proposition
This is a high-visibility role on a growing TEKsystems team supporting a long-term contract with strong stability and career growth potential. Engineers in this position gain exposure to one of the largest and most complex network environments, with clear opportunities for advancement, including promotion to higher labor categories with increased compensation. The position is critical to ensuring the delivery of secure, reliable network infrastructure and services.
