Alpha Omega is searching for an experienced Linux Systems Administrator to join one of our long-term Federal projects.
Alpha Omega is seeking a Linux Systems Administrator to support enterprise Linux infrastructure operations at the NCEI-CO site. This position provides administration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems and associated enterprise services in a mission-focused environment. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting Linux server environments, user administration, patching and vulnerability remediation, automation tools, monitoring systems, and general infrastructure operations. This role also includes limited hands-on IT hardware and operational support responsibilities during onsite support hours.

Salary and Benefit Information:
The likely salary range for this position is $64,000 - $78,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position and could fall outside of this range.

Key Responsibilities:
- Administer, maintain, and support Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server environments.
- Perform Linux system administration activities including user and group management, file system management, service monitoring, log review, and system troubleshooting.
- Support Identity Management (IdM) services and user account administration.
- Assist with server provisioning, configuration, deployment, and lifecycle management.
- Perform operating system patching, updates, and vulnerability remediation activities.
- Support vulnerability mitigation efforts in coordination with cybersecurity and infrastructure teams.
- Utilize automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible to support system administration tasks.
- Monitor system health and infrastructure status using monitoring platforms such as Nagios and Zabbix.
- Troubleshoot Linux system issues, application support issues, and operational incidents.
- Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for Linux-related user issues and server incidents.
- Respond to requests for technical assistance via phone, e-mail, in person, or the NCEI Jira ticketing application.
- Support walk-up requests from NCEI employees when it is not feasible for the employee to submit a support request.
- Provide incident and problem management for all issues reported by creating, updating, and managing requests.
- Escalate service requests in accordance with established procedures and document escalation or resolution as appropriate.
- Address assigned incidents and problems in a timely manner, consistent with applicable SLAs and established protocols.
- Support compliance with organizational security policies, STIG requirements, and configuration management standards.
- Assist with IT hardware support activities during onsite operations including equipment setup, peripheral support, and basic hardware troubleshooting.
- Document technical procedures, configurations, operational activities, and troubleshooting steps.
- Participate in maintenance windows and occasional after-hours operational support activities as required.
- Work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Adhere to NCEI change, configuration, and security guidelines.
Required Qualifications:
Required Experience/Skills:
- Minimum Years of Overall Experience: 2
- Minimum Years of Specific Experience in Field: 2
- Experience supporting Linux systems in an enterprise environment.
- Experience administering Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems.
- Familiarity with Linux command line administration, user and permission management, system patching, and shell scripting fundamentals.
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring tools such as Nagios or Zabbix.
- Familiarity with Ansible or other automation/configuration management tools.
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity and vulnerability remediation practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to lift and move IT equipment up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Red Hat Identity Management (IdM).
- Experience supporting virtualization platforms and enterprise backup solutions.
- Experience with STIG compliance and vulnerability remediation processes.
- Basic scripting experience using Bash or Python.
- Experience working in enterprise or government IT environments.
- Experience using ITSM ticketing tools such as Atlassian Jira or similar platforms.
- Basic knowledge of ITIL, Service Desk metrics/SLAs, and infrastructure operations.
(Required or Preferred) Education:
- Education Requirement with specific field of study: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS, Business or Related Technical Field.
Desired Certification(s):
- Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA).
- CompTIA Security+, Linux+, or Network+.
- Other Linux or infrastructure-related certifications.
