Overview

i3 is seeking a Safety Engineer to support the Launched Effects Product Office. This position will provide system safety, risk management, and technical engineering support for cutting-edge Launched Effects systems that enhance lethality, survivability, and situational awareness for Soldiers.
The Safety Engineer will support the planning, coordination, and execution of comprehensive system safety activities across Army Uncrewed Launched Effects platforms. The candidate will support safety engineering efforts throughout the product life cycle, including prototyping, development, testing, qualification, production, fielding, product improvement, and sustainment.

This role includes performing risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification and classification, hazard tracking, and evaluation of mitigation and corrective actions as part of the overall engineering and acquisition effort. The candidate will help ensure system safety is considered during all phases of Defense Acquisition and will support the successful delivery of high-reliability systems in a fast-paced, innovative product office environment.

The Safety Engineer will collaborate with project engineers, systems engineers, quality assurance personnel, government offices, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to support safe, effective, and efficient delivery of Launched Effects capabilities to the warfighter. The candidate will provide technical support and leadership on safety-related matters and will evaluate safety documentation, risk products, system safety analyses, and contractor safety processes for technical competence, completeness, and accuracy.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong engineering judgment, technical problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams. The candidate should be able to assess complex systems involving Launched Effects Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, develop safety recommendations, support acquisition planning, and prepare technical and programmatic documentation and briefings for leadership and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Support system safety, risk management, and technical engineering activities within the Launched Effects Product Office.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute comprehensive system safety activities for Launched Effects products.
  • Support safety engineering efforts for Army Uncrewed Launched Effects platforms across the full product life cycle.
  • Perform risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification and classification, and hazard tracking.
  • Evaluate mitigation and corrective actions to determine their effectiveness in maintaining safe systems and platforms.
  • Serve as a technical advisor on safety-related matters for Launched Effects systems.
  • Ensure system safety is considered throughout prototyping, development, testing, qualification, production, fielding, product improvement, and sustainment activities.
  • Support Defense Acquisition activities and provide safety input to program planning, technical reviews, and acquisition documentation.
  • Support monitoring of cost, schedule, and performance for safety and technical activities within the product office.
  • Coordinate with project engineers, systems engineers, quality assurance personnel, government offices, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate contractor system safety products, plans, analyses, and processes for technical competence, completeness, and accuracy.
  • Provide recommended changes to contractor documentation based on technical evaluations.
  • Perform research, analysis, and staff coordination in support of risk documentation.
  • Prepare, update, review, or assist with System Safety Risk Assessments, Risk Determinations, and related risk acceptance documentation.
  • Prepare, update, review, or assist with hardware and software safety analyses.
  • Support development and review of Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Management Plans, and System Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Prepare, review, or provide input to software safety technical data packages in support of materiel release and fielding efforts.
  • Develop, review, or evaluate safety requirements for incorporation into new and existing system development or improvement efforts.
  • Identify safety risks, issues, and opportunities and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and present safety, engineering, risk, and programmatic briefings to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced government product office environment.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and at least five (5) years of relevant safety engineering, systems engineering, aviation, defense, acquisition, or technical program experience.
  • Experience supporting system safety, risk management, hazard analysis, or safety assessment activities.
  • Experience supporting safety activities for complex defense, aviation, UAS, missile, launched effects, or related technical systems.
  • Experience with risk management tasks, risk analyses, hazard identification, hazard classification, and hazard tracking.
  • Ability to evaluate mitigation and corrective actions for safety effectiveness.
  • Understanding of system safety activities across the acquisition life cycle.
  • Ability to support development, testing, qualification, production, fielding, product improvement, or sustainment activities.
  • Ability to evaluate contractor safety products, plans, processes, analyses, and documentation.
  • Ability to prepare, review, or support technical, safety, and risk documentation.
  • Ability to coordinate with engineering, quality, program management, contracting, government, and contractor stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and task management skills.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Launched Effects, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, aviation systems, missile systems, or other advanced defense platforms.
  • Experience supporting a Program Management Office or Product Office environment.
  • Experience supporting Army aviation, Army acquisition, Defense Acquisition, or related defense programs.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-882, AR 385-10, AMCOM 385-17, or related system safety requirements.
  • Experience with SAE ARP 4754/4761, RTCA DO-178, DO-278, DO-254, DO-330, or related industry standards.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing System Safety Risk Assessments, Risk Determinations, or related risk acceptance documentation.
  • Experience developing or reviewing Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Management Plans, or System Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Experience supporting hardware or software safety analysis.
  • Experience supporting materiel release, fielding, or technical data package development.
  • Experience coordinating safety activities with government organizations, defense agencies, contractors, vendors, or external stakeholders.
  • Experience monitoring cost, schedule, and performance for technical or safety-related efforts.
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical, safety, risk, or programmatic briefings to leadership.
