Job Description

Duties

  • Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques.
  • Obtain needed information from supervisor on problems that may arise.
  • Resolve simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to supervisor.
  • Conduct exterior campus and interior patrols of the medical group on foot or in vehicles in accordance with the established schedule.
  • Observes the behavior of all persons in the vicinity to detect suspicious or abnormal behavior.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • One year probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical annually and thereafter.
  • This position is designated "Mission Essential".
  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Firearms testing and successful qualification to service component published standards required on a semi-annual basis. This may include firing at night, with one hand, or while under time or physical stress.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. For Security Guard positions in a hospital setting, experience as a psychiatric nursing assistant or a similar position safeguarding patients is qualifying.

Qualification Requirements for GS-06 Lead Security Guard:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing armed guard services for the protection of life (employees, visitors, patients, etc.); maintaining an activity report to document shift activity; and coordinating with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization to protect property against hazards such as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

This position is subject to the Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968 which makes it a felony for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
