Job Description

Duties

  • You will coordinate safety matters with other activities such as medical, fire prevention, procurement, etc. to provide adequate control of safety and health hazards.
  • You will coordinate long-term studies of unsafe work conditions.
  • You will ensure local safety instructions and guidance are in compliance and align with higher headquarters guidance and NAVOSH requirements.
  • You will plan inspections, reviews work processes, practices and conditions characteristic to the site to be inspected and studies historical data from previous inspections.
  • You will identify hazards and undesirable operational conditions.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Analyzing data on work operations, mishaps, and safety practices to prepare reports of findings that propose corrective measures for unsafe conditions and hazardous work practices; 2) Investigating mishaps, hazard reports, and unsafe working conditions to protect personnel and property; 3) Advising personnel of safety and occupational health measures to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes; and 4) Conducting safety and occupational health inspections and surveys to evaluate effectiveness of unit safety program.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Education may be substituted for Specialized Experience as follows:

Successfully completed of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
OR
Successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
OR
Successful completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.
OR
Have a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The performance of assigned duties requires frequent inspection and surveys of areas assigned requiring extensive walking, standing, bending, crouching, climbing, lifting, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in a combination of field and office settings. During regular inspections and
investigations in the field, the incumbent may be exposed to a variety of industrial hazards. The
incumbent may be required to don personal protective equipment.
