Interdisciplinary Environmental Engineer, Chemist/Toxicologist/G

Duties

• You will be responsible for ensuring the installation's compliance with the Japan Environmental Governing Standards (JEGS).
• You will be responsible for the implementation and improvement of the facility's solid and hazardous waste management programs particularly in relation to the proper handling, storage, and disposal of solid waste, hazardous material, and waste.
• You will provide guidance and develop engineering/scientific studies/projects needed to achieve and maintain compliance for solid and hazardous waste, hazardous materials and contaminated sites.
• You will track solid and hazardous waste disposal costs and quantities to ensure hazardous waste disposal and reuse quantities are tracked to meet targets and objectives.
• You will identify corrective actions for problems related to solid waste, hazardous waste, and hazardous material management.
• You will develop response capabilities at each installation and identifies training and equipment necessary for proper response to potential emergencies.
• You will develop guidance and provides project reviews to ensure incorporation of applicable requirements to the facilities improvement program and minor construction and repair projects as they relate to solid HW/HM generation/storage.

• Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness such as irritant chemicals, odorous fumes and exposure to outdoor environmental conditions such as high temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
• Work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring walking, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing to observe work operations.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience evaluating and ensuring existing operations, installation work processes, and pollution control programs comply with hazardous waste regulations and policies, spill response management, aboveground and underground storage tank management, solid waste, Petroleum/Oils/Lubricants (POL), Endangered Species, Polychlorinated Biphenyl's (PCB), wastewater, medical waste, pesticides, and asbestos.

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the ; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

Physical Scientist Series, 1301
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Geologist Series, 1350
Basic Requirements:
Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Toxicology Series, 0415
Basic Requirements:
Degree: toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

Priority consideration will be given to military spouse preference and family member preference eligible residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.
