Journeyman Software Engineer
(Contingent Upon Award)
Location: 100% Remote
Please note: Position availability is contingent upon award.
The Journeyman Software Engineer supports the design, development, testing, enhancement, and sustainment of websites, applications, APIs, and cloud-based solutions. This role contributes to Agile software delivery teams responsible for maintaining and modernizing mission systems in AWS GovCloud environments, supporting DevSecOps practices, automated testing, secure coding, system integration, and application performance improvement. The Journeyman Software Engineer works closely with senior engineers, business analysts, QA engineers, cybersecurity personnel, UI/UX designers, and cloud architects to deliver reliable, secure, scalable, and user-focused solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Responsible for designing, developing, and integrating medium-complexity web applications, CMS extensions, and RESTful APIs supporting mission workflows and secure data exchange.
• Assists with the modernization and sustainment of existing platforms, including CMS-based environments and custom applications hosted in AWS GovCloud.
• Implements backend services with secure patterns (authN/authZ, logging, error handling) and integrates with enterprise identity solutions like SSO/CAC.
• Supports feature development and content rendering optimizations while ensuring strict adherence to Section 508 accessibility and performance targets.
• Builds automated unit/integration tests and supports CI/CD pipelines, including pre-production validation and security/performance checks.
• Supports database schema changes and data migrations in coordination with DBAs; assists in the development of interface and data exchange protocols.
• Participates in Agile ceremonies, helps convert user stories into acceptance criteria, and collaborates with senior engineering staff on technical implementation.
Education: BS/BA degree and 5 years relevant experience (an additional 4 years experience may be substituted in lieu of degree).
Certifications:
Mandatory: DoD 8140/8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., Security+ CE or equivalent). Personnel must maintain certification in accordance with DoD 8140/DCWF requirements.
Preferred: AWS Certified Developer – Associate, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or other relevant cloud or DevSecOps certifications.
Security: Must hold or be able to obtain and maintain a favorably adjudicated Tier 3 investigation (Tier 5 required for privileged/root access).
Specific Tools: Python/Java, SQL (Oracle), Jenkins/GitLab CI, AWS GovCloud services, and CMS platforms.
