Job Description

Duties

  • You will evaluate repair requests to determine the time, material, and parts that are required to complete marine machinery repairs.
  • You will direct personnel in the installation and repair of marine engines and other equipment (e.g., propulsion machinery auxiliary generators, pumps, compressors, firefighting equipment).
  • You will direct personnel in the troubleshooting of marine engines and other equipment (e.g., propulsion machinery auxiliary generators, pumps, compressors, firefighting equipment).
  • You will advise mechanics on repairs to marine machinery, equipment, and their components

Additional Information:

The incumbent leads a group of approximately three Marine Machinery Mechanics, carrying out instructions from the Engine Shop Supervisor. The incumbent will establish work priorities and assignments for the shift, provide direction, provide hands-on maintenance, and repair of small marine craft. The MMM Leader reviews all work performed, and is responsible for quality assurance. The MMM Leader oversees troubleshooting, repair, preventive and corrective maintenance, installation and operation of marine diesel engines, outboard gasoline engines, various marine subsystems involving electronics, power generation, hydraulics, power transmission, etc., and equipment on a variety of marine craft and shop equipment - from assignment to completion. The incumbent will be expected to perform at a work leader level for other journeyman trade personnel, with respect to technical knowledge and skills. The section supervisor will only be consulted for the most complex issues. In the absence of the section supervisor, the MMM Leader will serve as the stand in supervisor. The MMM Leader will regularly assist with some administrative duties.

-The incumbent may be required to apply for and obtain a forklift license up to 3 ton (6000 pound capacity).
-Mandatory training is required from Mercury Marine in order to be qualified to perform warranty work on various outboards.
-Some same day travel is required to various worksites and boat yards, some located in remote areas in the greater Puget Sound area to perform maintenance, repairs, consultations and inspections, which will necessitate a driver's license.
-Employee may be required to become Facility Response Team (FRT) qualified, and may be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

The work requires long periods of constant standing and walking on the craft. Job performance may require working in cramped or awkward positions to reach a boat's engine.
Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over three foot bulwarks on a moving craft, which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. Will be required to lift and move articles weighing up to 75 pounds.
Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects.
Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of craft and ship operations.
Work requires physical exertion so incumbent must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in uncomfortable positions

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and inside an engine room. Will be subjected to outdoor conditions such as hot sun, spray, rain, sleet, and ice. Will be subjected to heat and noise from an operating diesel engine or various shop equipment. Incumbent will be exposed to the following: industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles; possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion; possible strains, cuts and bruises; industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss; eye hazards will exist in most areas and /or in certain operations; and organic growth (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) in dry-docks, saltwater systems and other areas exposed to seawater. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments

The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. Incumbent may also be assigned to work areas where contact with sewage waste is possible. To ensure employee safety and health, the CNRNW and PSNS & IMF maintain personnel protection
programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent will be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications and/or need for vaccination for duty involving work with these agents and/or possible contraction of disease
