Position Overview
Quantum Science Solutions (QSS) is seeking a skilled Software Engineer to support a backend development team focused on middleware and backend services. This role requires a strong backend development foundation with experience supporting scalable data processing and enterprise search technologies within production environments.
The ideal candidate will possess expertise in Solr or Elasticsearch, big data technologies, and backend Java development. The candidate will work within an Agile environment to design, develop, optimize, and maintain high-performance backend systems supporting mission-critical applications.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and deploy middleware and backend services in production environments
• Implement and maintain scalable backend applications using Java
• Develop and optimize search/indexing solutions using Solr or Elasticsearch
• Perform schema updates, shard management, and query optimization within search platforms
• Develop and optimize Lucene queries for complex search functionality
• Process and analyze large datasets using technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, PySpark, or HBase
• Participate in code reviews, unit testing, integration testing, and deployment activities
• Collaborate with cross-functional Agile teams to support system enhancements and production releases
• Utilize JIRA and GitHub for task management, version control, and collaboration
• Support performance tuning and troubleshooting activities across backend services and search infrastructure
Mandatory Skills
• Intermediate to Expert level experience with Solr or Elasticsearch (minimum 3 years), including performing schema updates, submitting and optimizing Lucene queries, understanding Solr/Elasticsearch shard architecture, and tuning Solr/Elasticsearch environments for performance and query optimization
• Minimum of 3 years of experience working within big data environments utilizing technologies such as Hadoop, PySpark, Apache Spark, and HBase, with experience in at least two of these technologies preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on backend Java development experience implementing production-level code that undergoes code reviews, unit testing, integration testing, and deployment to production environments
• Strong backend development experience using core Java (not JavaScript or Spring Boot-focused development)
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or equivalent technical degree
Preferred Skills
• Demonstrated experience working with AWS cloud services
• Experience utilizing JIRA and GitHub within Agile development environments
• Experience supporting distributed or scalable backend systems
• Familiarity with middleware architectures and enterprise backend services
