Job Description
EARLY CAREER MISSILE MODELING – IR PLUME ENGINEER (LEVEL 1)
Location: Schriever Space Force Base (Colorado Springs, CO)
Work Requirement: This role requires on-site work daily in a classified environment.
Clearance: Active DoD Secret clearance required at time of hire (no clearance sponsorship).
THE MISSION
Threat Systems Engineering (TSE) develops and delivers high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). Our team builds Modeling & Simulation (M&S) capabilities used across the missile defense enterprise—ranging from kinematic missile modeling to infrared (IR) signature modeling, data production/analysis, and sustainment of a large software baseline.
WHY THIS ROLE (EARLY CAREER)
This is a high-impact, early-career engineering opportunity for:
• Transitioning military professionals with an active Secret clearance and technical analysis experience, or
• Recent STEM graduate students (MS) ready to apply modeling, physics, and coding skills in a mission-critical environment.
You will contribute to time-sensitive deliverables used in real test and analysis environments—work that supports national defense outcomes and directly impacts simulation fidelity and decision-making.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
You’ll help develop high-fidelity threat missile signature data packages for use in a variety of modeling & simulation tools and media. Your focus will be on accurately representing infrared (IR) signature phenomenology across missile flight using engineering and mathematical algorithms. You’ll work as part of a product delivery team and support time-critical schedules tied to MDA ground test modeling and simulation activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Build experience in threat model phenomenology with a focus on Infrared (IR) signatures.
• Research IR signature prediction approaches and simulation models.
• Produce data and analysis deliverables supporting MDA Ground Test Modeling & Simulation needs.
• Coordinate with engineers on software requirements supporting threat modeling tools.
• Interpret stakeholder requirements and ensure high-quality production of threat missile data products.
• Support verification and validation of modeling & simulation datasets, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED)
Education / Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline AND 2 years of related experience; OR
• Master’s degree in a STEM discipline AND 0 years of experience.
Technical Requirements:
• Experience performing technical analysis of modeling & simulation (M&S) datasets.
• Experience with Verification and Validation (V&V) of M&S data.
• Experience with scripting/automation (Python, Bash, or MATLAB).
• Knowledge of missile flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and performance.
Clearance / Work Environment:
• Active DoD Secret clearance required (must already possess).
• Ability to work on-site daily at Schriever Space Force Base in a classified environment.
Professional Skills:
• Results-focused and self-motivated; able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail, time management, and ability to deliver reliable products and documentation on deadline.
NICE TO HAVE (NOT REQUIRED)
• Background in infrared (IR) signature modeling or IR physics.
• Familiarity with Optical Signatures Code (OSC) or JANNAF plume codes (e.g., SOCRATES-P, PERCORP, VIPER).
• Experience with blackbody IR emissions.
• Exposure to Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) or model-based systems engineering concepts.
• Ability to obtain a higher clearance level (if program needs require it).
WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
You’ll collaborate closely with threat modeling engineers and software teams to ensure datasets and signature products integrate cleanly into modeling tools and support mission timelines. Expect a fast-paced environment with structured processes, clear delivery expectations, and work tied to real test events.
IMPORTANT NOTE
This position requires daily on-site work in a classified environment. There is no remote or hybrid option.
