Paralegal IV

***A Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance is required for this position***

Paralegal IV will provide Professional Litigation Support Services to include performing legal research; performing records research; witness interviews; title reviews; preparation of reports as described below; research and response to landowner complaints.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Paralegal IV: $37/hour -$40/hour

Pay commensurate with experience.

Paralegal IV Responsibilities Include:
  • Shall provide professional litigation support services to include performing legal and records research, witness interviews, title reviews, preparation of reports as described below, research and response to landowner complaints, courtroom assistance/trial preparation, monthly reports. Some documents will be required to be notarized by the contractor.
    • Witness interviews: contractor shall conduct witness interviews and prepare a record of the interviews for use at deposition.
    • Title Review: review title commitments for accuracy. Create a deed history summary.
  • Contractor shall support and assist attorneys in the courtroom by preparing exhibit cross-references, and screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
  • Conducts witness interviews and prepare a record of the interviews for use at deposition. Contractor employees shall identify themselves as a contracted employee during phone and face-to-face interviews with landowners.
  • Identifies types of record keeping systems and types of records maintained which would be relevant. Gathers, sorts, and interprets data from various record systems including computer information systems. Develops statistics and tabulations, such as standard deviations, regression analyses, and weighting, to provide leads and supportive data for case litigation. Prepares charts, graphs, and tables to illustrate results. Analyze data, develops recommendations and justifications for the attorney(s) who will take the matter to court.
  • Designs and develops systems and procedures for tracking, controlling, and managing case files, exhibits, and other case-specific materials.
  • Reviews title commitments for accuracy. Create a deed history summary.
  • Prepares Declarations of Taking Reports, Amended Declarations of Taking (ADT) Reports, Complaints, Notices Joint Motions to Close, and Motions to Suppress; summarize depositions and other transcripts; maintain case files, control exhibits, and other materials at depositions and at trail for assigned cases.
  • Documents these complaints and the responses in a monthly report.
  • Identifies themselves as a contracted employee during phone and face-to-face interviews with landowners.
  • Supports and assists attorneys in the courtroom by preparing exhibit cross-references, and screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Paralegal IV Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
  • 2-year degree or higher, or High School diploma and paralegal certificate. Work experience can be substituted for paralegal certificate.
  • Requires paralegal certificate. An equivalent level of legal training may be substituted with the approval of the CO; undergraduate degree preferred. At least one year of litigation paralegal experience preferred; trial experience very helpful. Automated litigation support experience valued.
  • Three years of experience in legal support.
  • Ability to use, understand, and maintain directories, personnel lists, and other guides and references to provide a variety of information on the office and refer questions to other offices. Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Skilled in operating a computer terminal, personal computer, various office machines (fax, scanner, copier, etc).
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and telecommunications.
  • Ability to deliver the highest quality work under pressure.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including: word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources. Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be able to pass a Minimum Background Investigation prior to starting work on site and receive favorable adjudication of the appropriate Department of Justice background investigation consistent with a position sensitivity level 5, which requires the completion of an SF 85P/S, Questionnaire/s for Public Trust Position.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
