Senior Small USV Maintenance SME - Position Description

Security Clearance:
Applicant must hold or be able to obtain an active Department of Defense (DoD) SECRET personnel security clearance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
· Lead the coordination and execution of scheduled and corrective maintenance for Small USVs across assigned units, ensuring compliance with technical manuals, maintenance instructions, safety requirements, and configuration standards.
· Serve as the primary maintenance technical authority for Small USV hull, mechanical, electrical, and embedded mission systems (as applicable), providing troubleshooting guidance, root-cause analysis, and repair recommendations.
· Plan, prioritize, and track maintenance actions to meet operational timelines; integrate maintenance plans with operations schedules and availability windows.
· Coordinate required parts, tools, support equipment, and external support (e.g., depot-level, OEM/field service reps, and other stakeholders) to execute maintenance efficiently.
· Develop and maintain maintenance processes, checklists, and job guides; recommend updates to procedures based on lessons learned and reliability trends.
· Implement and monitor quality assurance practices, including verification of completed maintenance, controlled work packages, and configuration control.
· Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records; ensure proper closeout of work orders and reporting of discrepancies, failures, and safety incidents in accordance with unit policy.
· Conduct pre- and post-maintenance operational checks and validation events (including sea trials where required) to confirm system readiness and safe operation.
· Identify recurring failure modes and recommend reliability improvements, preventive maintenance adjustments, and spares posture changes.
· Provide on-the-job training (OJT) to USVRON 3 and USVRON 7 Sailors on Small USV maintenance fundamentals and advanced troubleshooting, emphasizing safety, technical rigor, and repeatable best practices.
· Design and execute a structured OJT program (task lists, demonstrations, supervised performance, and performance evaluation) aligned to unit needs and platform configuration.
· Mentor junior maintainers and maintenance leaders; assess training gaps, provide feedback, and recommend qualification standards/certification pathways.
· Support logistics and readiness reporting, including readiness brief inputs, maintenance status updates, and risk-to-mission impacts.
· Interface with engineering, program office, and fleet stakeholders to communicate maintenance trends, emergent issues, and recommended corrective actions.
Required Qualifications:
· Demonstrated senior-level experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing Small USVs or comparable unmanned/autonomous maritime platforms.
· Proficiency interpreting technical data (technical manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, maintenance instructions) and translating them into executable maintenance actions.
· Ability to lead maintenance planning and execution across multiple assets, balancing operational priorities, safety, quality, and schedule.
· Experience coaching and training maintainers through hands-on instruction in a shipboard, waterfront, or expeditionary environment.
· Strong understanding of maintenance documentation, configuration management principles, and quality assurance practices.
· Ability to work independently with minimal oversight while effectively coordinating with operations, supply/logistics, engineering, and leadership.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to brief readiness status, risks, and technical findings to mixed audiences.
Desired Qualifications:
· Prior experience supporting Navy unmanned surface operations and/or USV squadron maintenance (including waterfront integration and at-sea validation).
· Experience with condition-based maintenance, reliability-centered maintenance, and maintenance data trend analysis.
· Familiarity with vendor/OEM sustainment processes, field service coordination, and warranty repair workflows.
· Experience developing training plans, qualification task lists, and performance evaluation rubrics for maintainers.
· Working knowledge of cyber/IT hygiene considerations for networked or autonomous systems, to include basic hardening and configuration practices (as applicable to the platform).
Core Competencies:
· Work is performed in waterfront, shop, warehouse, and field environments, including exposure to weather, noise, and maritime hazards.
· Requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and strict adherence to safety procedures.
· May require lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, and working in confined spaces in and around small craft.
· May require travel and occasional non-standard hours to support operational schedules and emergent maintenance.
Reporting and Key Interfaces
· Coordinates daily with USVRON 3 and USVRON 7 maintenance and operations teams. Interfaces routinely with supply/logistics personnel, engineering/technical authorities, program office representatives, and OEM/field service support to resolve technical issues and execute maintenance events.
Education Requirement:
· Bachelor's Degree in Business or equivalent work experience.
