Job Description

About the Role

We are hiring a mid-level Configuration Manager to support a long-running Department of Defense program at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane in southern Indiana. The program develops, sustains, and fields small arms platforms for the warfighter — work that demands rigorous configuration discipline across mechanical, electronic, and software components.

This is a career-defining opportunity to step into an established CM function alongside a long-tenured incumbent who will serve as your technical mentor through a 6–12 month knowledge-transfer period. You will not be expected to lead the function on Day 1. You will be expected to be a credible CM practitioner from Day 1, absorb institutional knowledge, and grow into the seat.

The program is actively migrating from legacy iPDM tooling to PTC Windchill. The right candidate will help carry that transition across the finish line while keeping the existing baseline clean, auditable, and release-ready.

What You’ll Do

Own the day-to-day configuration identification, control, status accounting, and audit activities for a small arms hardware platform, including its associated documentation, drawings, and technical data packages (TDPs).
Administer and maintain baselines in iPDM today, and help drive the ongoing transition of program data and workflows into Windchill.
Process engineering change proposals (ECPs), requests for deviation (RFDs), and requests for waiver (RFWs); chair or support the Configuration Control Board (CCB) and document decisions.
Manage drawing release, revision control, part numbering, and naming conventions across the program’s TDP in accordance with MIL-STD-31000 and applicable DoD CM guidance.
Conduct functional and physical configuration audits (FCA/PCA) and support program milestone reviews.
Generate and track CDRL/SDRL deliverables tied to configuration management, and interface directly with the prime contractor’s program office on CM status, change dispositions, and deliverable acceptance.
Collaborate daily with mechanical/systems engineers, technicians, quality, and logistics across two ranges at Crane.
Shadow the incumbent CM lead through a structured 6–12 month transition, document tribal knowledge, and progressively assume full ownership of the CM function.
What You Must Bring

These are non-negotiable. Please do not apply if you cannot demonstrate each of the following:

Active U.S. DoD Secret security clearance (candidates who cannot currently hold a Secret will not be considered).
Hands-on experience working in iPDM (Integrated Product Data Management). You should be able to walk through workflows, approvals, and baseline management without training from scratch.
Working knowledge of PTC Windchill — you don’t need to be an expert, but you must be able to navigate, administer standard CM workflows, and contribute to an in-flight migration.
Demonstrated CM practitioner experience — you have actually done configuration management, not adjacent document control or technical writing work.
Willingness and ability to work on-site at NSWC Crane, Indiana, 5 days per week. This position is not remote or hybrid.
Effective written and verbal communication — you will interface directly with the prime contractor’s program office and will be expected to present CM status clearly.
What Will Set You Apart

Prior work on small arms, weapons, munitions, or similar DoD hardware programs.
Familiarity with the NSWC Crane environment or other Navy/DoD tenant sites.
Experience driving or supporting a PLM migration (iPDM → Windchill, Teamcenter → Windchill, or similar).
Working knowledge of MIL-STD-31000 (TDPs), MIL-HDBK-61A (CM guidance), EIA-649, and DoD 5000-series acquisition lifecycle.
Experience generating CDRLs/SDRLs and interfacing with DCMA or government CM points of contact.
Exposure to Earned Value Management (EVM) reporting as it relates to CM deliverables.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Information Systems, or related field (equivalent experience considered).
Why This Role

Stable, funded, multi-year program with option years running through late 2029.
Direct mentorship from a long-tenured incumbent before assuming full responsibility — a rare chance to inherit a fully built CM function rather than stand one up from scratch.
Small, close-knit team split across two ranges at Crane — high visibility, direct access to engineering leadership, minimal bureaucracy.
Work that matters — the products you help configure end up in the hands of U.S. service members.
