Duties
Help
  • You will carry out supervisory functions, i.e. plan work assignments based on priorities; identify employee training needs; give advice, counsel, or instruction to employees; recommend disciplinary action in serious cases.
  • You will direct engineering efforts to improve or design ventilation systems, tools, equipment and processes.
  • You will identify confined spaces and other workplaces to be monitored, establishing frequency of monitoring, methods of testing and calibration, and equipment to be used.
  • You will establish requirements for developing, maintaining and issuing general and unique GFR and IH Division engineering instructions and control or eliminate potential hazards.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Your resume is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to this position. Therefore, we encourage you to be clear and specific when describing your experience.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Providing advice and direction for a broad range of industrial hygiene maters, including the difficult types of industrial hygiene evaluations;
  • Applying new techniques, technical advances to solve novel or obscure problems which are not readily treatable by conventional methods;
  • Training industrial hygienists, occupational safety and health personnel, management, supervisors and employees;
  • Recognizing management practices, theories, and techniques w/an understanding of organizational structures, functions, procedures and applicable regulations as relate to the Industrial Hygiene environment;
  • Supervising personnel, (i.e. rendering technical advice and direction on industrial hygiene sampling and analysis technique; discussing field survey finding; discussing technical issues and control recommendations, resolving technical disagreements; setting priorities, preparing schedules, and planning work to be accomplished; etc.); AND
  • Providing advice and assistance w/regard to experimental operations where protection of workers from hazards must be weighed against the developmental needs for new products or processes.

Education

ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE Basic Requirements

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0600/industrial-hygiene-series-0690/ A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; (Your transcripts must be attached.) Failure to submit a copy of your transcripts with your application will result in an ineligible rating.

OR

A Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained.
