Duties

The United States Space Force (USSF) Space Operations Command (SpOC) 9th Sustainment Squadron (9 STS) under Mission Delta 9 (MD9) at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado is searching for a Mission Engineer (NH-0801-03, GS 12/13 equivalent).

Description:
Become a pivotal Mission Engineer with the 9th Sustainment Squadron, supporting Mission Delta 9 from beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. In this role, you will manage the complete lifecycle-from acquisition and development to sustainment-of critical weapon systems, subsystems, and support equipment. Your work directly contributes to a vital national security objective: protecting and defending U.S. orbital assets and providing decision-makers with options to deter and defeat emerging threats. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and collaborative engineer who can effectively apply a comprehensive knowledge of multidisciplinary engineering principles and practices to support weapon system acquisition and sustainment. Success in this role requires an exceptional communicator, both verbally and in writing, who understands military program goals and can align technical responsibilities with mission-critical objectives. We are looking for a proactive team player adept at navigating complex challenges within a fast-paced environment.

Key Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of the theories, concepts, principles, practices, standards, methods, techniques, and materials of multidisciplinary professional engineering to effectively apply engineering theories, principles, and concepts to areas of responsibility.
2. Knowledge of the principles of planning, program management, standard acquisition regulations, practices, and procedures.
3. Knowledge of safety, security, personnel management, and EEO regulations, practices, and procedures.
4. Ability to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts, or to resolve operating problems by influencing or motivating individuals or groups who are working toward mutual goals. The work involves engineering, planning, developing, and carrying out vital administrative processes.
5. Ability to independently research, evaluate, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and procedures to a variety of situations and to recommend timely and economical solutions.
6. Familiarity of military (including command level) program goals and objectives; the sequence and timing of key operational events and milestones; methods of evaluating the effectiveness of planning actions related to actual events; and the relationship of the various command entities involved in overall program planning and execution of military operations and evaluations.
7. Knowledge of the application of military space operations expertise as they apply to programs and weapons systems.
8. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy, both orally and in writing, as well as work in a professional manner with peers, management, contractors, academia, and other agencies.
9. Knowledge of computer programming including Python and Java.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance with SCI access.
  • Employee needs to obtain and maintain approval to access the portfolio of Special Access Programs required to perform daily duties.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • Employee is in a designated position that requires consent and thereafter be subject to and successfully complete, an initial, periodic, and random counterintelligence (CI) scope polygraph examination as a condition of employment.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance for the position.
  • Position requires a professional engineering degree at the bachelor's level from an ABET accredited institution is required. Advanced degrees are preferred.
  • The position is part of the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). The employee must meet the functional area certification requirements within the timeframe range of 1-5 years from appointment date into the position.
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • The employee must meet the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements applicable to the duties of the position.
  • May be required to work overtime on an unscheduled or emergency basis.
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of TDY assignments.
