Job Description
Northrop Grumman Marine Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join our team within Marine Logistics Support (MLS) as a Field Service Engineer 4. Duties of the Field Service Engineer may include (but are not limited to) overseeing the installation, repair and troubleshooting of mechanical aspects of the Northrop Grumman Marine Systems marine machinery onboard naval vessels in accordance with Northrop Grumman drawing and processes.
This position is travel based and may be filled in any continental US State. Candidates work will be performed in shipyard and industrial/manufacturing environments in the US.
What You'll Get to Do:
In this role, you will have the opportunity to complete a wide variety of challenges that span the gamut of effort required to accomplish system-level repairs of our turbine-generators and gear-driven propulsion units-from new installation, mechanical upgrades, complete overhauls and writing procedures and reports. Along the way, you will learn all about the technologies that make our power-generation and propulsion systems unique, gaining valuable insight to ensure our products are assets our nation's bravest service members can trust.
Position responsibilities include project planning and management, customer interface, providing technical direction to shipyard or Northrop Grumman trade personnel, technical report writing, expense reporting and accounting, initiation of design changes when necessary and occasional hands on labor. The Field Service Engineer should be comfortable working and traveling independently.
The role we perform requires 75% travel while working 12-hr shifts, 7 days per week and may include night shift. Each assignment may span from one day up to five months continuously in some cases. Although the workload may sound intense, we do offer flexibility in taking paid time off and compensation for all additional hours worked on shift. Primary Level Salary Range: $71,900.00 - $119,900.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.

Additional job responsibilities of a MLS Field Service Engineer:
- Manage their field assignments and oversee all aspects of the work including leading NG factory hourly personnel, NG factory engineering personnel, customer provided labor, sub-vendors, and/or Ship's Force.
- Operate independently at customer facilities with remote guidance and technical assistance as needed.
- Autonomously define requirements and the path to a repair or resolution by using NG drawings and documented processes. The repair path is unique for each task based on the problem presented and is communicated to the customer and management. Tasking may require re-prioritization to achieve critical objectives, deadlines and milestones.
- Required to write technical condition reports that capture customer required data/measurements as interim, or final, progress for the projects they manage.
- Communicate project status to MLS management and to customers.
- Provide technical support to customers and guidance to touch labor during the installation, modification, troubleshooting, repair and test of marine propulsion and power generation equipment.
- Compiles a recommended replacement material list to aid in repairs and troubleshooting.
- Provides technical engineering support during repairs.
- Determines the root cause of a reported problem.
- Oversees the disassembly and inspection process.
- Designs custom tooling, jigs or equipment as needed.
- Creates a disassembly and inspection plan by apply engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
- Analyzes what is wrong with the machinery/system by talking to the customer, observing machine operations, defining a troubleshooting plan, and analyzing control system data.
- Utilizes critical thinking and engineering analysis throughout the repair.
- MLS Field Service Engineers are responsible for tracking contract financials, contract scope and departure from scope, which results in Requests for Equitable Adjustment (REA) to the contract.
- Work at customer sites, normally onboard Navy surface ships and submarines. The working environment is not an office but a heavy manufacturing or operating environment requiring climbing ladders and navigating cramped spaces for access. Field Service Engineers are on their feet most of the day, climbing on and over equipment for inspection and repair.
- MLS Field Service Engineers Travel up to 75%, regularly work extended hours, often 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week and can include night shift. Travel assignments are continuous, sometimes up to 5 months.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline with 8+ years relevant work experience; or Master's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline with 5+ years relevant work experience.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and schematics.
- Strong communications skills both oral and written.
- Strong customer service skills including positive attitude.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Have an understanding of engineering root cause corrective action analysis.
- Capable of performing work onboard a ship which can involve climbing steep stairways and vertical ladders.
- Ability/Willingness to frequently work extended hours (often 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week).
- Ability/Willingness to travel up to 75%, often times with short notice (24 hours).
- Ability/Willingness to work night shift.
- US Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
- Hands on experience and theoretical knowledge of steam driven shipboard propulsion and power generation equipment and their associated subsystems.
- Previous work experience in a shipyard/ ship repair industrial work area.
- Working knowledge of a machine shop, various hand tools and precision measuring devices.
- Candidate located near customer sites: Norfolk, VA, Groton, CT, and Kittery, ME.
- Active Secret Clearance.
