A primary focus of this role is advanced virtualization engineering and management, leveraging VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM) to enable scalable, resilient, and secure mission systems and infrastructure. The Systems Engineer drives the system lifecycle end-to-end-from concept development and requirements capture, through integration, verification, operational deployment and eventual system retirement. As a central interface among management, customers, suppliers, and specialized teams, the Systems Engineer ensures diverse requirements and constraints are understood and met. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams to incorporate emerging technologies, troubleshoot complex issues, and optimize system performance in alignment with business and mission goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Virtualization & Platform Engineering:
  • Architect, deploy, and administer secure, scalable, and highly available virtualization solutions using VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), NSX, vSAN, and vSphere
  • Implement, configure, and manage VMware Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM) to support efficient user profile, environment personalization, and policy management for mission-critical and classified environments
  • Design and implement automated system build, configuration, and compliance workflows for virtualization platforms
  • Provide strategic input on adopting, integrating, and optimizing virtualization and SDDC (Software-Defined Data Center) technologies to advance mission capability, system resilience, and security

System Design & Implementation:
  • Develop and implement robust system architectures that meet stringent performance, reliability, scalability, and security requirements
  • Capture and manage requirements; develop use cases, workflows (OPSCON/CONOPS), and validation plans from concept through deployment
  • Evaluate new technologies for integration with mission systems, especially those improving virtualization, automation, and security posture
  • Ensure designs and implementations align with DoD, industry, and program-specific best practices and compliance standards

System Maintenance & Optimization:
  • Conduct ongoing health checks, upgrades, and patch management for virtualization and mission systems to ensure operational readiness
  • Analyze and optimize system and virtual infrastructure performance; proactively address bottlenecks and risks
  • Develop, implement, and continually refine testing and validation protocols covering both functional and security requirements

Troubleshooting & Support:
  • Identify, diagnose, and quickly resolve technical issues affecting virtual and physical infrastructure, minimizing operational impact
  • Provide advanced problem resolution for VMware solutions (VCF, DEM, vSphere, NSX, vSAN) in cross-platform environments
  • Log, document, and analyze incidents to support root cause analysis and preventive action planning

Project Management & Collaboration:
  • Lead and coordinate system integration and virtualization projects, balancing performance, cost, schedule, risk, and security to deliver successful solutions
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure requirements are accurately captured and implemented across the system lifecycle
  • Advise program stakeholders on technical trade-offs and best practices for platform scalability, security, and interoperability
  • Prioritize and track enhancements, change requests, and deployments to synchronize with organizational objectives

Documentation & Compliance:
  • Create, update, and maintain detailed technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, configuration baselines, user guides, and change logs
  • Ensure all solutions and processes adhere to security, data protection, and regulatory requirements (such as DoD STIGs, RMF, ACAS guidelines)
  • Maintain awareness of evolving virtualization, security, and DevOps technologies/trends and incorporate as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with VMware vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and modern virtualization environments
  • Experience integrating and automating virtualization platforms using tools such as Ansible, PowerCLI, or similar
  • Strong knowledge of systems engineering processes, system design, and architecture
  • Fluency with Windows, Linux/Unix, and embedded operating systems in virtualized and non-virtualized contexts
  • Experience ensuring compliance with DoD/industry security and data protection protocols
  • Advanced troubleshooting and analytical skills for complex, mission-critical infrastructure
  • Strong written and verbal communication, teamwork, and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and projects to deadline
