Job Description

Duties

  • You will develop and manage a dynamic, comprehensive 24/7 OSHE and industrial hygiene program for very diverse, innovative,
  • And complex educational and research activities conducted at laboratories and field experiment sites in California and worldwide.
  • You will identify and make recommendations to OSHE Director and NPS leadership regarding policy provisions or procedures that are not feasible, overly costly, or inconsistent with program objectives.
  • You will recommend to the methods to prevent, correct, reduce, or remove the occupational exposures and/or hazards.
  • You will provide prospective assessments of proposed research, activities, contracts, and purchases.
  • You will conduct scientific research to provide data on possible harmful conditions and potentially dangerous environmental factors or stressors arising in or from the workplace
  • You will review and develop guidance documents and respond to taskers pertaining to all aspects of OSHE.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
  • Work also includes frequent lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 23 kilograms (i.e., under 50 pounds) such as record boxes, equipment, or assisting in self-care transfer activities.
  • Special safety precautions such as protective clothing and equipment are necessary.
  • Demonstration of expertise and experience as Certified Industrial Hygienist is preferred.
  • The work involves regular and reoccurring potential exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: toxic or irritating chemicals; carcinogenic materials; noxious fumes; flammable liquids; radiation; and/or noise.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent
experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Developing corrective action to occupational and environmental health hazards; 2) Advising personnel on industrial hygiene and occupational safety policies and procedures; 3) Evaluating Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE) and industrial hygiene programs to determine efficiency and effectiveness of operations; and 4) Monitoring Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE) and industrial hygiene programs to ensure compliance with regulations. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Applicants must possess a completed Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable)
OR
Have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable).
OR
Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
