Duties
Help
  • You will independently perform the full range of aircraft sheet metal mechanic duties, including the most complex repairs and fabrications on various aircraft types.
  • You will assess damaged parts to determine the sequence of operations necessary for sheet metal repairs or replacements.
  • You will remove fixed sheet metal and composite structures from aircraft and disassemble structural and non-structural metal and composite components.
  • You will work from technical drawings, directives, manuals, and other written or verbal instructions to complete sheet metal work.
  • You will comply with safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • You will assist with training and mentoring other artisans at the same or lower level.
  • You will accomplish other duties assigned.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work rotating shifts and overtime, as necessary.
  • This position requires heavy lifting over 40 pounds and carrying of objects up to 40 pounds. Also, this position is subject to working at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Tasks for this position will be performed standing, sitting at a bench, and bending. At times pulling, pushing, and reaching are required with intermittent bending.
  • This position is subject to various noise levels, which occasionally exceed 85 DBA.
  • Hearing protection must be worn for noise levels of 85 DBA and double protection is needed for levels over 96 DBA.
  • This position requires corrected vision as eye strain may occur from prolonged work on small parts, near vision correctable at Jaeger 2 at 14" binocular, far vision correctable in one eye 20/20 or better.
  • This position may have exposure to cuts, electrical shock, strains, broken bones, and contact with industrial materials such as cleaning chemicals, solvents, oils, and greases.
  • You will be required to comply with health, safety and environmental instructions, and policies as well as all agency policies and procedures.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION, and includes the following: 1) Accomplishing aircraft sheet metal mechanic duties, which include repairs and fabrications on various aircrafts; 2) Performing metal repair, fabrication, planning, laying out, designing, assembling, and dissembling of aircraft and associated components; 3) Utilizing techniques and/or methods to assemble metal systems for assigned aircraft; 4) Utilizing the ability to recognize size bolts, screws, rivets, and all fasteners associated with the aircraft trade; 5) Analyzing and troubleshooting aircraft metal structures and components to determine repairs or replacements; 6) Assisting in the development of solutions for metal fabrication, repair and modification issues; 7) Serving as a technical expert for sheet metal repairs and modifications for aircraft systems and associated components; 8) Reading and interpreting technical drawings, blue prints, and schematics for aircraft sheet metal work; and 9) Assisting in mentoring and training for lower level mechanics and personnel in support of agency goals and objectives.
