Our client seeks a Senior Database Administrator to lead SQL Server migrations from on-premises to Google Cloud and to administer large, high-availability database environments. The role covers installation, configuration, maintenance, performance tuning, and security for SQL Server across on-premises and Google Cloud platforms. The Senior DBA will plan architecture and capacity, implement DR, enforce least-privilege security with encryption in transit and at rest, and mentor DBAs while collaborating with development, infrastructure, and security teams.

Applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis and convert to FTE following contract duration. Rate: $55.00 to $65.00/hr. w2

Responsibilities:
  • Work full-time onsite at DOT Headquarters in Washington, DC, providing in-person support on early or late shifts as needed.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server across on-premises, VMware, and Google Cloud environments.
  • Configure, manage, and optimize Google Cloud SQL and Managed Instances.
  • Plan and execute database migrations from on-premises to Google Cloud using IaaS and PaaS patterns.
  • Contribute to database architecture and capacity planning to ensure scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Design, implement, and maintain disaster recovery strategies targeting Google Cloud.
  • Monitor performance, integrity, and security of database platforms and investigate anomalies.
  • Perform routine maintenance including index optimization, statistics updates, and consistency checks.
  • Plan and perform upgrades, patching, and migrations for standalone and cloud-hosted servers.
  • Lead migration projects including lift-and-shift and re-platforming to Google Cloud.
  • Manage accounts, roles, and permissions following least-privilege and compliance requirements.
  • Audit database activity and maintain logs of configuration and schema changes for compliance and forensics.
  • Implement encryption and secure connectivity with TLS/SSL for data at rest and in transit.
  • Maintain detailed, version-controlled documentation including architecture diagrams, configurations, procedures, and runbooks.
  • Generate regular performance, capacity growth, and usage trend reports for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and security teams to streamline deployments and speed incident resolution.
  • Mentor DBAs on Google Cloud practices, define operational best practices, and contribute to automation.
  • Support on-call rotations and monthly maintenance activities in a high-urgency environment.

Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum 10 years as a SQL Server DBA supporting enterprise production environments.
  • Hands-on administration of SQL Server versions 2012 through 2022 across on-premises, VMware, and Google Cloud.
  • Expertise in installation, configuration, optimization, patching, backup and restore, and performance tuning.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing performance using execution plans, Query Store, wait statistics, and indexing and statistics strategies.
  • Experience implementing database security controls including Transparent Data Encryption and TLS/SSL for encrypted connections.
  • Proven success planning and executing SQL Server migrations to Google Cloud using IaaS and PaaS services.
  • Experience migrating SQL clusters and designing HA/DR with appropriate cutover and validation strategies.
  • Experience with role-based access control, least-privilege models, AD group-based access, and auditing.
  • Operational experience in hybrid environments with monitoring, alerting, reporting, and incident response.
  • Ability to multitask effectively and perform under pressure with on-call participation and shift coverage.

Education Requirements:
  • Relevant SQL Server certifications.
  • Google Cloud certification such as Professional Data Engineer or Cloud Architect.
