Job Description

Duties

As a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER (TITLE 5), GS-0081-9, you will serve as a Station Chief responsible for oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of a fire station with two or more firefighting crews (including a Crew Chief and assigned crew) who drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, fight airfield and structural fires, perform crash and rescue operations, and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards.
  • Provides immediate oversight and direction of day-to-day operations at a fire station for an assigned shift.
  • Supervises two or more crews, each including a Crew Chief and three or more firefighters, at least one Driver-Operator, and one piece of motorized firefighting equipment in firefighting and crash-rescue operations.
  • Plans and assigns work to be accomplished by subordinates based on priorities and deadlines, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees.
  • Coordinates with chiefs on other shifts and at other stations concerning matters of work accomplishment, training, priorities, and procedures.
  • Identifies developmental and training needs of station personnel and makes arrangements to meet those needs.
  • Writes/recommends airman and civilian performance standards, advises subordinates in advance of performance expectations, and evaluates performance.
  • Prepares reports for the supervisor concerning fire runs, training, maintenance, inspections, or other topics.
  • As the Station Chief, provides immediate oversight and direction of day-to-day operations at a fire station for an assigned shift.
  • Takes charge of all firefighting activities at the scene in the absence of the Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief.
  • Performs pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems.
  • Directs and/or demonstrates functional tests and inspections.

  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • Drug testing may be required.
  • Selectee may be required to serve a supervisory probationary period.
  • Maximum entry age is 37. For exceptions and reentry provisions, see DoDI 1400.25, Vol. 336.
  • Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness testing program.
  • Must meet and maintain medical standards for Fire and Emergency Services personnel in accordance with OPM GS-0081 and DoD occupational medical requirements.
  • This position is FLSA Non-Exempt. Overtime pay is determined in accordance with Fair Labor Standards Act provisions applicable to firefighters.
  • Required to work a 24-hour shift schedule, which may include up to a 72-hour workweek (144-hour pay period). Tour of duty is subject to change pending higher-level approval. May be subject to recall.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be able to operate emergency vehicles as required.
  • May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center, participate on HAZMAT teams, and operate aircraft arresting barrier equipment, as mission-required.
  • Must possess and maintain required DoD Fire and Emergency Services certifications or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalents, as applicable to the position.
  • Position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be required to perform duties during emergencies or disaster declarations, not to exceed authorized limits.
  • Position is covered under special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters under FERS or CSRS, as applicable. Coverage may be retroactive to the effective date of the personnel action.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence:
  • The area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : GS-09 LEVEL - MUST possess the specialized experience for the GS-09 Level, which includes at least 24 months experience, education, or training in one or more of the following areas: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. (2) Rescue operations. (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. (4) Operation of fire communications equipment. (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention (7) Firefighting and fire prevention theory and techniques; (8) Fixed and mobile firefighting equipment operation. (9) Planning, directing, or carrying out fire protection and prevention programs and operations and/or (10) Performing emergency medical services.

SPECIALIZED SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE : MUST possess experience in managing the function of the work to be performed. Experience which includes leading, directing and assigning work of personnel.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
