About the Role:
Culmen International is seeking experienced Somalia Cultural/Political Advisors.
Culmen International is seeking a Somalia Cultural/Political Advisor to support a U.S. Government customer in Somalia. Advisors provide Somali↔English interpretation/translation and delivers timely cultural, political, and operational context to support senior leader engagements and mission execution.
You will provide Somali-to-English and English-to-Somali interpretation and translation support and advise JSOTF-SOM leadership on Somali culture, politics, and operational context. You will help facilitate key leader engagements, provide cultural context, and serve as a liaison between U.S. personnel and members of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
This is an in-country role in Somalia with deployment to the AFRICOM area of responsibility (AOR). Candidates must be able to live and work in austere environments and meet U.S. Government pre-deployment medical and psychological screening requirements, as applicable.
What You'll Do in Your New Role:
Advise and assist senior leadership during engagements with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
Provide accurate, real-time interpretation and written translation (Somali↔English).
Apply knowledge of U.S. military operations and policy and Somali culture and politics to day-to-day mission support.
Review and analyze foreign-language materials to identify and report key information.
Coordinate with U.S. and Somali Government counterparts to research and develop written products for headquarters.
Maintain working knowledge of campaign plans and military objectives to align support to mission priorities.
Provide analysis and practical recommendations to improve engagement effectiveness and operational outcomes.
Identify opportunities to strengthen and improve ongoing interactions with the FGS.
Required Qualifications:
Eligibility Requirement - US Citizen (This requirement is necessary to meet the security and eligibility requirements for the performance of this contract).
Active TS/SCI security clearance
Excellent command of English and Somali (ILR Level 3 proficiency)
3+ years of cultural advisory experience in Somalia
Thorough understanding of the geopolitical situation in the Horn of Africa
Willingness to deploy within the AFRICOM area of responsibility (AOR)
Ability to complete all U.S. Government required pre-deployment medical and psychological screenings, as needed
Ability to live and work in austere and harsh environments
Ability to manage stressful situations and perform at a high level for extended periods
Proficiency with basic computer tools (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher
5+ years of experience as a linguist and cultural advisor
Prior experience supporting U.S. SOF elements
Prior experience supporting U.S. military leaders in a deployed environment
