Job Description
SMX is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, development, and evolution of enterprise-level data architecture supporting a federal law enforcement client. This role will drive the strategic integration of HR and financial data systems, enabling advanced analytics, AI/ML capabilities, and data-driven decision-making across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in cloud-based data platforms, data warehousing, and ETL/ELT pipelines, and will serve as a technical leader guiding cross-functional teams in delivering scalable, secure, and high-performance data solutions. This position requires close collaboration with stakeholders, engineers, and analysts to modernize data infrastructure and support mission-critical initiatives. This is a full-time position requiring on-site work four days a week at a client's office in Washington, D.C. An active Top-Secret clearance is mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and implementation of enterprise data architecture across multiple systems, ensuring scalability, performance, and security
- Define data models, data standards, and architecture patterns for structured and unstructured data
- Architect and oversee ETL/ELT pipelines and data integration frameworks across cloud and on-prem environments
- Guide the development of data warehouses and data lakes using modern cloud technologies (e.g., AWS GovCloud, Redshift, Aurora/Postgres)
- Support integration of Business Intelligence tools (e.g., MicroStrategy, ThoughtSpot, Tableau, Power BI) for advanced analytics and reporting
- Collaborate with AI/ML teams to enable data pipelines that support predictive analytics and GenAI use cases
- Establish and enforce data governance, data quality, and metadata management standards
- Lead architecture reviews, technical design sessions, and system modernization efforts
- Partner with program leadership to align data strategy with mission objectives and contract deliverables
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data engineers, developers, and analysts
Required Skills:
- Active Top Secret (TS/SCI) Clearance (aligned to your standard requirement)
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (Master's preferred)
- 10+ years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, or related field
- Extensive experience with data warehousing and database technologies (e.g., SQL, Oracle, AWS Redshift)
- Strong expertise in ETL/ELT processes and data integration tools (e.g., Airflow, AWS Glue, Informatica, dbt)
- Experience designing and implementing cloud-based data platforms, preferably in AWS GovCloud
- Deep knowledge of data modeling (dimensional, relational, and NoSQL)
- Experience supporting federal government IT systems and contracts
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Experience with AI/ML data pipelines and GenAI-enabled analytics solutions
- Familiarity with MicroStrategy (Strategy), ThoughtSpot, or similar BI tools
- Experience supporting large-scale HR, financial, or enterprise data systems
- Knowledge of Kubernetes / AWS EKS for data platform deployment and scalability
- Experience with data governance frameworks, metadata management, and data cataloging tools
- Prior experience supporting ATO processes and secure cloud migrations (e.g., CMC, GovCloud)
