The System Administrator V provides senior-level systems administration support for the DOI/IA enterprise infrastructure, server, and application environments. This role leads complex troubleshooting, supports modernization and security efforts, and serves as a senior technical resource across Windows, Linux, virtualization, user support, user training, and directory service environments. The position also supports and leads project-based work involving upgrades, migrations, implementation, testing, and process improvement.

The System Administrator V provides senior-level systems administration support for the DOI/IA enterprise infrastructure, server, and application environments. The position also supports and leads project-based work involving upgrades, migrations, implementation, testing, and process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Administer and optimize Windows and Linux server environments across enterprise systems.
- Lead complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis for infrastructure and hosted services.
- Support VMware infrastructure, storage platforms, and core enterprise services.
- Administer Active Directory, access controls, file services, and domain support functions.
- Support Group Policy, hardening, patching, vulnerability remediation, and system upgrades.
- Support backup, restore, replication, and disaster recovery readiness activities.
- Evaluate capacity, performance, and availability and recommend improvements.
- Ensure production changes follow change control and documentation requirements.
- Develop technical procedures, recovery instructions, and implementation records.
- Serve as a senior escalation point and support lower-tier staff.
- Support and lead project-based tasks involving modernization, migration, implementation, testing, and operational improvement.
- Ensure that all system administration activities follow established OIT guidelines and procedures.
- Establish file storage shares/folders with the proper ACL permissions; new and migrated.
- Assist with agency-specific risk assessments to identify, categorize, prioritize, and manage HVAs.
- Perform systems management, system monitoring, and upgrade of all applicable DOI/IA systems.
- Work with other staff in developing and documenting new procedures for tasks.
- Provide systems support for providing the necessary hardware and OS configurations needed for database and application support in all environments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree, technical certificate, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of related technical experience supporting server or data center environments.
- Strong experience supporting Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
- Strong working knowledge of VMware and enterprise virtualization.
- Experience with patching, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and hardware/software upgrades.
- Experience providing Tier II/III and senior escalation support.
- Background check with the ability to obtain Public Trust
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, IIS, file services, and domain controllers.
- Experience with centralized monitoring, event/log analysis, and enterprise operations.
- Familiarity with STIGs, least privilege, role-based access, and privileged account management.
- Experience with storage, replication, COOP, or disaster recovery operations.
- Basic knowledge of PowerShell, Visual Basic, .NET, C#, or similar scripting/programming languages.
- Experience supporting project-based infrastructure or modernization initiatives.
- Relevant Microsoft, Linux, VMware, or systems administration certifications.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required government suitability or clearance, if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to resolve highly complex technical issues independently.
- Ability to develop technical and project documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical tasks or support multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Knowledge of senior-level enterprise systems administration and data center operations.
- Knowledge of Windows Server, Linux, VMware, Active Directory, and enterprise security practices.
- Knowledge of patching, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and disaster recovery support.
- Skill in leading troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and incident resolution.
- Skill in preparing procedures, records, and technical documentation.
- Ability to mentor junior staff and support cross-functional efforts.
- Ability to coordinate and lead project-based technical work.
- Ability to support on call 24/7/365.
- Ability to occasionally travel to sites where the IT systems are located
