Job Description

Data Engineer
Hybrid | Fort Belvoir, Virginia | IAT II Certification Required

If you want to build secure, modern data platforms that enable advanced analytics and emerging technologies in support of mission readiness, and work alongside professionals who value technical excellence, collaboration, and real-world impact, we would love to talk.

Why This Role Exists
The work we do has real impact, and the people behind it matter just as much.

As a Data Engineer supporting the Defense Logistics Agency’s Applied Research and Testing Emerging Technologies program, you will help modernize the data platforms and warehousing capabilities that enable advanced analytics across mission-critical logistics systems. Working within a secure research environment, you will contribute to the development of scalable, distributed data solutions that support evolving operational requirements and modernization efforts across the Department of Defense.

The right person for this role is a hands-on data engineer who is comfortable designing and optimizing scalable data pipelines, building enterprise data warehousing solutions, and supporting distributed processing frameworks that enable advanced analytics and evolving analytical capabilities. You are technically strong in SQL and modern programming languages, experienced in secure DoD environments, and capable of translating emerging research requirements into stable, high-performance data engineering solutions. You are adaptable, detail-oriented, and comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment where experimentation and modernization efforts are ongoing

What You Will Do
• Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and enterprise data warehousing solutions.
• Develop and maintain Extract, Transform, and Load processes for structured and unstructured data sources.
• Implement data cleansing, integration, and data quality assurance processes to maintain integrity across large datasets.
• Build and support centralized data warehouse environments integrating multiple enterprise data sources.
• Support large-scale distributed processing using frameworks such as Spark, Kafka, Hive, or Hadoop.
• Build and maintain data environments leveraging AWS services including Redshift, RDS, EMR, and EC2.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate research and operational requirements into secure data engineering solutions.
• Support DevSecOps practices including version control, secure configuration management, and automated deployment processes.
• Perform root cause analysis on data and system issues and implement corrective solutions.
• Contribute to analytics enablement through tools such as Power BI, SAS Viya, Qlik, or similar platforms.
• Document architecture, workflows, and technical processes in alignment with Federal and DoD standards.

What We Are Looking For

Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related technical field.
• Five or more years of experience as a Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or similar technical role.
• Experience designing and supporting enterprise data warehousing architectures.
• Experience building and optimizing large-scale data pipelines and ETL processes.
• Strong proficiency with SQL and experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as SQL Server, Postgres, or Cassandra.
• Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Spark, Kafka, Hive, or Hadoop.
• Experience working with AWS services including Redshift, RDS, EMR, and EC2.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, R, Scala, or Java.
• Experience supporting secure development practices within Federal or DoD environments.

Certification Requirement

• Must possess an IAT II certification in accordance with DoD 8570 or 8140 requirements.
• One certification from each of the following lists:

Eligibility Requirements
