Junior Cyber Security Engineer – GCCS-J
Location: Newport News, VA – On-site Full-Time Required

Program: Global Command and Control System – Joint (GCCS-J)
Program Summary
GCCS-J is the DoD’s Joint Command and Control system of record, providing a fused, real-time operational picture to commanders and warfighters. The modernization effort emphasizes secure cloud-native architecture, microservices, advanced data ingestion, improved data integrity, and alignment with JADC2 objectives. Cybersecurity is foundational to this modernization, ensuring that all software and infrastructure meet stringent DoD security, accreditation, and operational resilience requirements.
Position Summary
The Junior Cyber Security Engineer supports cybersecurity and Information Assurance (IA) activities within GCCS-J classified development and integration environments. This role assists with vulnerability scanning, system hardening, security documentation, and compliance verification under the guidance of senior cybersecurity staff. The engineer helps ensure that software, systems, and SIPR lab environments meet DoD cybersecurity standards while gaining hands-on experience with RMF, STIGs, and secure software engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
Area Responsibilities
IA & RMF Assistance • Assist with RMF documentation and security control evidence.
• Support implementation of basic IA requirements.
SIPR Lab Security Support • Support secure operations of SIPR-based development labs.
• Assist with system hardening, patching, and configuration updates.
Vulnerability Scanning & Compliance • Run vulnerability scans under supervision. • Document findings and track remediation progress.
Secure Software Support • Assist developers in applying secure coding practices.
• Review software components for basic security issues.
DevSecOps & Automation Assistance • Support automated security scanning in CI/CD pipelines.
• Assist with tool configuration and reporting.
Monitoring & Incident Support • Monitor systems for basic security alerts.
• Support incident response activities as directed.
Documentation & Reporting • Maintain security logs, scan results, and compliance artifacts.
• Assist with audit preparation and security reviews.
Team Collaboration • Work with senior cybersecurity engineers, ISSOs, developers, and testers.
• Communicate findings clearly and professionally.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related STEM field.
• 0–2 years of cybersecurity or IA experience.
• Familiarity with RMF, DISA STIGs, and DoD cybersecurity concepts.
• Exposure to vulnerability scanning tools (ACAS, Nessus, etc.).
• Basic understanding of Linux/UNIX and Windows system administration.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
• Active Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
• Exposure to DoD systems or classified environments.
• Familiarity with secure coding concepts.
• Understanding of network security fundamentals.
• Experience with scripting or automation tools.
• Knowledge of SIEM tools or log analysis.
