What You'll Be Doing :

Responsibilities include the installation, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of various preservation and support systems, including dehumidification machinery, cathodic protection systems, and fire and flooding alarm equipment. This also encompasses associated components such as motors, transformers, control panels, rectifiers, sensing devices, and automatic control systems. In coordination with the Inspection Department, the incumbent performs periodic inspections and functional tests of preservation equipment using appropriate diagnostic tools, documenting results for official records and reports.

Additional duties involve the fabrication, installation, and wiring of a variety of electrical components, including switch panels, indicating devices, resistance heating elements, lighting fixtures, and power or lighting cubicles.

The position also includes the installation and repair of shore power systems for berthed vessels. The role requires the ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds (average 40 pounds) over distances up to 200 feet. While the workload is generally moderate, periods of elevated activity can occur during power outages, adverse weather conditions, or ship movements. Work conditions may occasionally involve operating at elevated heights, climbing vertical or inclined ladders, and assuming physically demanding positions such as kneeling, stooping, or maneuvering in confined spaces.
  • Install, maintain, overhaul, and repair dehumidification systems, cathodic protection equipment, and fire and flooding alarm systems, including associated components such as motors, transformers, rectifiers, and control panels.
  • Conduct routine inspections and performance testing of all preservation equipment in coordination with the Inspection Department, utilizing appropriate test instruments and documenting findings for records and reports.
  • Fabricate, install, and wire various electrical components, including switch panels, lighting fixtures, resistance heating units, and both power and lighting cubicles.
  • Perform installation and repair of shore power connections to support vessels during berthing and operational phases.
  • Operate and maintain sensing devices and automated control systems, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with safety standards.
  • Safely lift and transport materials weighing up to 60 pounds, with an average of 40 pounds, over distances of up to 200 feet.
  • Respond to emergency or high-priority situations, such as power outages, severe weather events, or ship movements, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Work in physically demanding environments, including climbing vertical and inclined ladders, working at heights, and maneuvering in confined or restricted spaces.
  • Follow all applicable safety regulations and procedures, especially when handling electrical systems and working in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Support cross-functional teams and collaborate effectively with other departments to ensure efficient project execution and equipment readiness.
  • Fabricate, install and test flood alarm systems for tow packages while on travel with little to no supervision.

What You'll Need to Succeed :

Minimum Requirements:
  • Required five (5) years Navy or Coast Guard shipboard experience or five (5) years electrical experience with at least two (2) years of apprenticeship / training.
  • 3 phase wiring and 220 / 440 wiring.

Preferred:
  • 4-year apprenticeship, Navy equivalent schooling or 2-year tech school with 5+ years Shipyard experience or 5+ years industrial experience 3 phase wiring and 220 / 440 wiring

Knowledge Required :
  • Must be able to read small print and hear sufficiently to detect unusual sounds in motors, blowers, and running machinery.
  • May be exposed to electrical shock, steel projections, falls, poor lighting, and hazardous chemicals and conditions.
  • Position requires a background check.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
