Northrop Grumman is seeking to hire a Hypersonic Testbed Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) Team Tech Lead. This position will be in Huntsville, AL or Roy, UT supporting the Advanced Programs organization.
The Technical Lead for the GNC team will serve on one or more Advanced Program initiatives, directing the technical development of hypersonic navigation algorithms that provide precision navigation at high Mach numbers in both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric flight. Responsibilities include designing and implementing strap-down inertial navigation systems integrated with GPS and Kalman-filter techniques, enhancing existing navigation analysis tools with custom features for emerging missions, and conducting covariance analysis alongside circular-error-probable (CEP) accuracy assessments. In addition to a heavy focus on navigation algorithm design the engineer in this role will:

Primary Level Salary Range: $169,000.00 - $253,600.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.

In addition to a heavy focus on navigation algorithm design the engineer in this role will:
- Participate in engineering review boards, technical interchange meetings and critical milestone reviews.
- Contribute to planning, determining resource requirements and IMS development.
- Determine and report incremental performance improvements.
- Respond to analysis package requests.
- Perform trajectory assessment and flight analyses.
- Gather and analyze the mission requirements to ensure mission objectives and constraints are met.
- Collaborate with a team of GN&C engineers in an Agile environment to meet critical milestones.
- Develop and analyze GNC algorithms (Guidance, Navigation, Autopilot).
- Develop and integrate vehicle navigation algorithms into 6 degree of freedom (6dof) simulations.
- Develop, verify, and validate complex 6 degree of freedom vehicle models.
- Model missile components such has inertial measurement units (IMU) and thrust vector control (TVC) systems.
- Use C++ and MATLAB and Object-Oriented design.
- Conduct multidisciplinary research and collaborate with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, and development stages, utilizing (M&S) tools systems for safety and mission critical analysis.
- Work with the GN&C Flight Software Team to automatically generate code from high-level specifications or models, ensuring consistency and reducing manual errors.
Basic Qualifications:
- 12 years of experience with a Bachelors degree; 10 years of experience with a Masters degree or 8 years of experience with PhD. An additional 4 years of experience can be considered in 'lieu of' a degree
- Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with an investigation date within the last 6 years.
- 6 years demonstrated experience in the area of guidance, navigation, or control algorithm development and/or analysis for launch vehicles, missiles, spacecraft, and/or aircraft.
- 6 years demonstrated experience coding in a higher-level programming language (C, C++, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.)
- 4 years experience with full software lifecycle: specification, design, implementation, integration, debug and maintenance.
- 6 years experience in developing GNC algorithms (Guidance, Navigation, Autopilot).
- 6 years experience with Agile Development with DoDAF standards and methods.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Substantial experience in inertial navigation design for Hypersonic applications.
- PhD or Masters advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering or applicable technical discipline.
- Experience developing a strapdown inertial navigation system.
- Experience developing GPS aided GNC systems.
- Experience in covariance and CEP analysis.
- Experience with a software version control system, such as Git, Gitlabs, and/or Bitbucket.
- Extensive experience with MATLAB/Simulink.
- Experience with Object-Oriented Programming.
- Proficiency in technical writing and documentation.
- Knowledge of estimation and control theory, such as Kalman filtering.
- Experience with linear stability analysis to determine control system stability margins.
- Experience modeling navigation sensors, such as IMU or GPS.
- Active DoD Top Secret clearance.
- Experience in algorithmic application development, integration, and optimization.
- Experience with the Atlassian tool set, Agile Development, Model Based Engineering, and Software Development best practices.
- Experience with DO-178C Flight Critical Systems Safety programming.
- Experience with certification, airworthiness, testing, and qualification of flight and safety critical systems.
