In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in the food service industry that includes collecting and processing laboratory specimens. Update and maintain patient records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Successfully completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, and Phlebotomy. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

- Provide phlebotomy training for new laboratory employees, as well as other hospital staff on venipuncture, capillary puncture, glucose tolerance testing, and blood culture collection.
- Perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques to include finger or heel sticks for micro-samples of capillary blood on neonates to adults, collect specimens, and prepare and store slides of various types.
- Perform minimal complexity lab tests in accordance with the Point of Care Testing (POCT) program guidance and follow standard operating procedures.
- Check that all specimens are properly and completely labeled, ensure the proper request, computer orders, and correct specimen (i.e., type, amount, etc.) are submitted with all required information.
- Perform all required specimen preparations prior to storage and shipment (i.e., centrifugation, serum separation, freezing, etc.) and follow infection control regulations in handling, storage, packaging, and disposal of biohazards materials.
- Ensure adequate supplies of shipping tubes, shipping containers, and labels are on hand, and place orders as necessary.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination unless exempted by professional medical personnel or for administrative reasons.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
- This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
