Description:Space is a critical domain, connecting our technologies, our security, and our humanity. While others view space as a destination, we see it as a realm of possibilities, where we can do more - we can innovate, invest, inspire, and integrate our capabilities to transform the future.

At Lockheed Martin Space (LMS), we aim to harness the full potential of space to cultivate innovation, reduce costs, and push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. We're creating future-ready solutions, focusing on resiliency and urgency through our 21st Century Security® vision. We're erasing boundaries and forming partnerships across industries and around the world. We're advancing spacecraft and the workforce to fuel the next generation. And we're reimagining how space can connect us, ensuring security and prosperity.

The Optical Sensor Components (OSC) department is seeking a Optical Sensor Components Senior Manager (preferred location is Louisville, CO) to significantly impact the enterprise through establishment of a dedicated team working to drive common, high TRL payload products across programs.

We partner with the Optical Talent Center (OTC) engineering managers, engineers, architects, & Fellows to develop product maturation plans in accordance with Lines of Business (LOB) roadmaps & need dates. We keep abreast of SOA (State of Art) as well as SOP (State of Practice) to provide subject matter expertise (SME) across all program lifecycles, and consult on make/buy decisions for their products & would be the execution team if a "make" decision was determined by the program.

As the Optical Sensor Components Senior Manager, you will:
• Lead management team managers & a department consisting of new hire to Fellow-level optical & detector engineers supporting all LM Business Areas (BAs) & LMS Lines LOBs with SME oversight, design, development, & manufacture of optical payloads, optical benches, telescopes, focal plane array subsystems, & detector technology.
Partner with LOBs, OTC Program Development, & OTC Systems Engineering to develop architectures for optical payloads for space, airborne, & tactical missions in a manner to allow use of common products.
Work across LM BAs to develop optical & detector products & to communicate staffing, training, & product development needs for optical payloads & detectors, & to compliment the OSC team across LM.
• Develop transition plans for low TRL products from the science & technology community.
• Work with Payload IPTs leads & LOB leadership to understand mission drivers. Fold emerging mission trends into product roadmap to ensure a discriminating edge.
• In coordination with OTC Program Development, propose & execute IRAD projects with a goal of standardization & maturation. Identify targeted products to reach a state that can be considered "high TRL", "commodity" or "Off- the-Shelf".
• Stay abreast of technology development in optics & detectors. Build relationships with suppliers of optics & detectors.
• Perform with the Integrated Product Team (IPT) in cases where an OTC make is selected. Support all program phases & be responsible for EU (engineering unit), qualification & flight as determined by programs. This may be at the optical payload, optical bench, telescope, focal plane subsystem, & detector component, sub-assembly or subsystem level.
• Implement & lead technical knowledge management to develop & maintain core competencies, technical skills, knowledge continuity & facilitate career advancement opportunities to employees.
• Partner with other OTC departments to support OTC initiatives such as AI use, process improvement, & program execution improvement. Capture optical payload engineering best practices in engineering into LM command media.
• Execute performance reviews & lead the OSC management team in functional management of the department. Hire staff & staffing requirements, sustain engineering capability, & preserve critical skills.
Basic Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience designing, building, or testing optical payloads or optical or detector subsystems across space, tactical, and/or ground applications
• Established experience in developing technical talent and building pipelines to sustain technical expertise within the organization
• Experience delivering on Optical PL or other optical products
• Must have an Active Final Top Secret Clearance to be considered, with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with Poly clearance; US Citizen is required
Desired Skills:
• Experience as a certified CAM on programs
• Experience in the execution of IRAD programs and projects
• 5+ years demonstrated hands-on expertise in space OR complex hardware/software systems
• Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing focal plane arrays (FPAs). For passive EO, we work with staring and scanning FPAs in the visible and IR domain. For active EO, we work across multiple types of lidar receiver arrays, primarily GmAPD.
• Demonstrated experience in signal chains. A signal chain typically refers to the command and routing/processing/dissemination of mission data. There are usually multiple components that encompass a signal chain: front end E-O convertor (i.e., focal plane), image data processor, image data router, and image data storage
• Demonstrated experience in developing calibrators, optical components and developing/evaluating optical coatings. We work with a range of optical systems starting from the sub-meter class through apertures greater than 1.5M.
• Demonstrated experience in developing active EO (lidar systems). We work with fiber and planar waveguide lasers. These lasers output a range of power densities that encompass use in long range imaging applications all the way through directed energy applications.
• Have experience in developing space qualification plans for components
• Experience writing proposals including writing and reviewing Basis of Estimate cost proposals.
* Excellent communications skills both verbal and written with the proven ability to communicate
