Duties
Help
  • Design, develop, and execute online curriculum for the Department of Distance Education.
  • Serve as a faculty instructor for courses, including but not limited to, Theories of War, National Security, Regional Studies, Strategic Leadership, Defense Management, and Joint Warfighting.
  • Contribute to and coordinate for curriculum updates, assessments, and faculty development for assigned courses.
  • Engage in research and publishable scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the Army War College curriculum.
  • Contribute to student success through advising and professional communication.
  • Contribute to the Department of Distance Education and the Army War College mission by fulfilling other faculty duties as required.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.

This is a term appointment in the excepted service starting on or before 1 July 2026 and not to exceed 3 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave.

Qualification Requirements:
Degree:
related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as political science, international relations, public policy, or history;

OR

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the disciplines equivalent to a major in the field;

OR

Five years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the disciplines equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

  • Demonstrated knowledge of military theory, strategy, history, and the conduct of war, with the ability to apply these concepts in academic or professional settings.
  • Must possess a degree in history, strategic studies, national security, international relations, political science, or related field; advanced degree or Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to teach graduate seminars of 15-20 students in both synchronous and asynchronous formats.
  • Recent (within the last three years) experience using student learning management systems and collaboration tools to design and execute online courses. Experience designing and executing high-enrollment courses (100+ students) preferred.
  • Evidence of scholarly research and peer-reviewed publications in areas relevant to the USAWC curriculum, preferably focused on military theories of war, strategy, or history.
