Responsibilities

The Assistant Chief Engineer supports daily facility operations by ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant MEP system performance, supervising staff, enforcing standards, and leading maintenance and emergency response, assuming full responsibility in the Chief Engineer's absence.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of building systems in accordance with approved procedures, manufacturer specifications, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor daily maintenance activities, ensuring work is completed on schedule and meets quality standards.
  • Support the execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, guidance, and accountability for technicians and shift leads.
  • Reinforce standards, expectations, and procedural compliance across the workforce.
  • Support training and development of staff to enhance technical capabilities and operational performance.
  • Provide performance feedback to the Chief Engineer to support personnel actions.
  • Review CMMS (Maximo) work orders, service tickets, and operational logs for accuracy, completeness, and quality assurance.
  • Ensure proper documentation of maintenance activities to support traceability and compliance.
  • Identify trends and support root cause analysis through accurate data review.
  • Develop, refine, and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) and methods of procedure (MOPs) for mission-critical systems.
  • Ensure adherence to site safety policies, regulatory requirements, and customer standards.
  • Coordinate procurement of materials, parts, and services required for maintenance operations.
  • Maintain inventory levels, ensuring availability of critical spare parts and consumables to prevent delays in maintenance and repairs.
  • Support coordination and oversight of subcontractors performing maintenance or project work.
  • Verify work is executed in accordance with approved procedures and quality standards.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling work to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in managing daily operations, workforce performance, and maintenance execution.

Work is performed in a 24/7 mission-critical facility environment requiring on-call availability as needed. The role involves working in mechanical and electrical spaces, including confined areas, to support operations and maintenance activities.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years' experience in facilities maintenance with a high school Diploma or GED is required.
  • 3+ years of experience trained and certified in the operations, maintenance and management of the BAS/EMCS/DDC systems.
  • Third Class Steam Engineers License issued by the state of Maryland or Virginia or the District of Columbia required.

  • Experience and knowledge of office administration, plant management, reporting, blueprints, buildings, equipment, housekeeping, construction, repair, maintenance, purchasing, inventory control, fire, safety management, and OSHA codes.
  • A demonstrated ability to identify, analyzes, and resolves complex problems associated with general construction, and maintenance/repair of commercial facilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including a working knowledge of MS Project and the MS Office Suite.
  • Fluent/Experience in a Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Abilities:
  • The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to [50 pounds] on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Relocates a 12-foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
