Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Extinguishing fires as a member of an organized group such as: military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department; 2) Lead a firefighter team performing emergency rescue operations of personnel; 3) Controlling hazardous materials incidents to prevent danger; AND 4) Performing basic life support procedures on patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Driver Operator Pumper Certification; Hazardous Technician Certification; Fire Officer 1; Fire Instructor 1; Fire Inspector 1; AND Driver Operator Aerial Certification certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06 AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable.

- Conduct a complete initial patient assessment and physical examination to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the condition.
- Participate in on-scene patient care in response to emergency calls.
- Lead crew in responding and/or combating fires in locations such as ships, trains, trucks, and structures.
- Assess fire ground conditions to fight fire in the most effective manner.
- Determine the appropriate technique and the proper extinguishing agent to fight a fire.
- Fight structural fires based on knowledge of building layout, potentially hazardous materials, and fixed fire protection systems.
- Suppress wild land fires by utilizing hose lays, hand line construction, and mop up.
- Complete and submit written documents to accurately reflect work results.
- Maintain a daily journal of all activities performed at the Fire Station.
- Identify training needed by supervised employees to help support the overall mission.
- Plan, assign, and evaluate work of subordinates.
- Assure timely completion of work and that established schedules and deadlines are met.

- This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more. Employee may be required to lift/carry personnel in emergency situations.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Position is designated inclement weather essential.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5 % of the time.
- Rotating shift work required - 72 hour workweek/144 hours per pay period.
- Must possess and maintain at all times, a noncommercial driver license or a commercial Class C and operate firefighting equipment, including a tiller operator, to have a firefighter endorsement "F".
- Firefighters with a Class A or B commercial driver license (CDL) are not required to add the "F" endorsement to continue operating firefighting equipment, as long as CDL includes all applicable endorsements for the vehicle they are operating.
- Must be able to pass a pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoDi 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain United States Coast Guard Master's license covering the Fireboat, under a 100 tonnage, within 18 months of appointment.
- This is a Formal Land based Shipboard Firefighting position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
