Maximus is currently seeking a Principal Enterprise Architect. This position is responsible for ensuring that all architectural activities, solution designs, and technology decisions are fully aligned with the Maximus Enterprise Architecture (EA) framework and associated governance processes. The role must adhere to established architecture standards, reference architectures, data management and data quality principles, integration and API-first guidelines, security and compliance requirements, and enterprise-wide engineering best practices. The architect will ensure that proposed solutions support the target-state architecture, promote interoperability and reuse, and uphold consistency across platforms and programs. This position will actively engage with enterprise architecture, security, data, and engineering stakeholders to validate alignment, reduce architectural risk, and ensure solutions support Maximus' long-term strategy and operational excellence.
To be considered qualified for the Principal Enterprise Architect role, candidates must have demonstrated, hands-on experience translating business and technology strategy into actionable architectural guidance, reusable patterns, and aligned roadmaps. The position requires prior success collaborating with senior business leaders, product teams, and technology stakeholders to drive architectural consistency, interoperability, and strategic alignment across programs and platforms. Candidates without direct experience performing these responsibilities in an enterprise context will not meet the qualification criteria for this positon.
This position is remote but requires occasional travel to Maximus HQ or the Client site.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all of the resources and support for hardware and hardware modernization (as well as the addition of new capabilities) meet the client's requirements.
- Leverage technological advances to improve system capability, reliability, and extend system life.
- Provide a variety of technical support analysis and integration required.
- Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to both Business and Technical Teams on the overall solution architecture.
- Perform gap analysis of current and targeted system operating environments.
- Provide a technology roadmap for maintaining and improving services provided to the external customers.
- Provide forward leading solution enhancements to the Business that support both cost and quality competitiveness.
- Work effectively and efficiently with other departments and Senior Leadership (Capture Management Team, IT Infrastructure, Information Security, and Application Development) to ensure all needs are included in the overall architecture.
- Assist in proposal writing and business development which includes; understanding overall client business needs, product/service strategic direction operations, federal policy requirements, and business development strategy.
- Frequently responsible for providing guidance, coaching, and training to other employees across the organization within area of expertise.
Job-Specific Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Enterprise Architecture Development, Strategy & Governance
- Contribute to the definition, execution, and maturity of the Maximus Enterprise Architecture framework under the guidance of the Senior Principal EA.
- Maintain and enhance enterprise principles, guardrails, and reference models across architecture domains.
- Participate in EA review boards, architecture working groups, and governance forums; prepare analyses and recommendations for senior architectural leadership.
- Assess programs and projects for alignment to enterprise strategies, standards, and target-state architectures.
- Support the development of enterprise capability maps, domain models, and multi-year transformation roadmaps.
Business & Capability Architecture
- Partner with business units to document, analyze, and refine business capabilities, processes, and value streams.
- Identify capability gaps, redundancies, and opportunities for simplification and modernization.
- Translate business strategy into target-state capability models and solution-agnostic architectural recommendations.
- Support adoption of enterprise capability frameworks across programs and delivery teams.
Enterprise Data Architecture
- Work with the data organization to apply and evolve enterprise data standards, data domains, and data governance models.
- Participate in the creation and maintenance of the enterprise data catalog, data lineage, and metadata frameworks.
- Collaborate with data engineering teams to guide the design of data pipelines and shared data assets that align with enterprise interoperability and governance.
- Promote enterprise data-sharing patterns, authoritative data sources, and improved data quality practices across teams.
Information, Application & Integration Architecture
- Assist in defining target-state application portfolios, integration architectures, and shared service patterns.
- Conduct architectural assessments to identify consolidation, rationalization, and modernization opportunities.
- Work with integration and platform teams to support API governance, microservices architectures, and event-driven design.
- Recommend solution patterns that maximize reuse, interoperability, and compliance with enterprise principles.
Technology Architecture & Modernization
- Support the development of enterprise technology standards across cloud, infrastructure, security, and platform services.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and provide input on enterprise adoption, pilot initiatives, and architecture guardrails.
- Partner with DevSecOps, security, and platform teams to promote standardized enterprise technology practices.
Enterprise Advisory & Leadership
- Provide architectural guidance to project teams, product owners, program managers, and technical leaders.
- Communicate architectural decisions, options, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Advocate for enterprise-first thinking, encouraging alignment to shared standards, reusable patterns, and enterprise roadmaps.
- Act as a trusted advisor, escalating enterprise-wide issues and risks to the Senior Principal EA as appropriate.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study and 10+ years of relevant professional experience required.
Job-Specific Minimum Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience across enterprise architecture domains (business, data, application, technology).
- Occasional Travel to Maximus HQ or Client site.
- Demonstrated experience designing architectures for complex systems and multi-program environments.
- Working knowledge of enterprise data architecture, metadata management, and data governance.
