Department Summary:

The MITRE Legal Office upholds MITRE's purpose and legitimacy by providing the legal expertise and services needed to protect the company's interests. MITRE's Legal Office delivers strategic direction for current and new endeavors and executes functions essential to the company's ongoing operation. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Chief Employment Counsel, this position provides advice and support across a broad range of corporate matters, with particular emphasis on employment law compliance and counseling, ethics and compliance, workplace investigations and employment related disputes.

Work will be in our McLean VA office.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal counsel to Human Resources on employment-related matters including employee relations issues, workplace investigations, performance management, and terminations.
  • Advise on compliance with federal, state and local employment and labor laws, including discrimination, harassment, wage and hour requirements, leave and accommodation obligations, and other workplace regulations.
  • Assist in managing employment-related litigation and administrative agency matters, including EEOC charges and demand letters.
  • Support and implementation of MITRE's policies, procedures, and training programs to promote compliance and mitigate legal risk.
  • Collaborate and assist the Chief Employment Counsel and the Head of Compliance with workforce initiatives and enterprise workforce actions.
  • Analyze and advise on conflict of interest compliance under applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Work closely with other MITRE leaders, attorneys, and internal project leaders to support new growth initiatives, strategic relationships, and mitigate financial and legal risks.
  • Work extensively with MITRE team members and leaders on federal, state, and commercial contracts, and general legal matters. Identify, track, mitigate, and resolve risk issues; and exercise independent judgment and discretion in solving complex legal- and business-related issues.
  • Promote FFRDC roles and values through knowledge training and education.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree (any);
    • Juris Doctor from accredited law school;
    • At least five years of experience as a practicing attorney;
    • Member of the state bar in good standing;
    • Practicing attorney licensed to practice in VA, or able to get limited corporate counsel admission
    • Demonstrated experience in conducting and providing legal advice related to internal and external investigations;
    • Demonstrated experience in litigation;
    • Knowledge of ERISA and other employee benefit laws and regulations and/or federal, state and local tax laws and regulations;
    • Demonstrated ability to make informed decisions, manage workload, and meet deadlines
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
    • Ability to function productively in a fast-paced environment; and
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience (3+ years) in a regional or national law firm
  • Demonstrated experience advising clients on compliance with conflicts of interest regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Experience in commercial contract drafting and negotiation
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and effectively engage with staff, customers, and vendors at all levels on federal and commercial contracts, leases, and general legal matters
  • Demonstrated successful business negotiation experience
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to initiate and foster collaborative relationships both internally and externally
