We are seeking a Database Administrator to support administration, performance optimization, security, and lifecycle management of enterprise relational database platforms across modernization and sustainment initiatives within large Federal environments. This role ensures database reliability, availability, scalability, and data integrity across development, test, staging, and production environments. The Database Administrator collaborates with application teams, data engineers, infrastructure staff, and cybersecurity stakeholders to support operational stability, system enhancements, and evolving enterprise data management needs. This position contributes to structured database governance practices within Agile and DevSecOps delivery environments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Install, configure, maintain, and secure enterprise relational database environments supporting mission-critical applications.
• Monitor and optimize database performance, including query tuning, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and resource utilization management.
• Implement and manage backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data continuity and system resilience.
• Support database patching, upgrades, environment refreshes, and migration activities aligned with release schedules and vulnerability remediation timelines.
• Collaborate with development teams to optimize database queries, stored procedures, schema structures, and data access patterns.
• Troubleshoot database incidents including performance bottlenecks, locking conditions, failed jobs, data inconsistencies, and connectivity issues.
• Implement and maintain database security controls, including access management, encryption, auditing, and compliance with organizational cybersecurity standards.
• Conduct capacity planning and performance trend analysis to support scalability and modernization initiatives.
• Maintain comprehensive database documentation, including schema designs, configuration baselines, maintenance procedures, and operational runbooks.
• Support reporting, analytics, and integration requirements through efficient data structures and database services.
• Participate in change management and release coordination activities to assess database impacts and validate deployment readiness.
• Support data migration, masking, and synchronization activities across environments where required.
• Monitor database logs and metrics to proactively identify risks and implement mitigation strategies.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and coordinate with cross-functional teams to support continuous delivery objectives.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of database administration practices, automation approaches, and governance processes.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
• 5+ years of experience administering enterprise relational database platforms in complex IT environments.
• Strong proficiency in SQL development, query optimization, indexing strategies, and data modeling concepts.
• Experience implementing backup and recovery solutions, high availability configurations, and disaster recovery planning.
• Ability to diagnose and resolve database performance and stability issues across multiple environments.
• Understanding of database security practices, including access controls, encryption, and audit mechanisms.
• Familiarity with database administration and monitoring tools supporting enterprise database platforms.
• Experience supporting Agile or DevSecOps-aligned database lifecycle activities.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with development, infrastructure, analytics, and cybersecurity teams.
• Experience working with widely adopted enterprise relational database technologies such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle or similar platforms.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED:
• Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs, is a plus.
• Experience administering databases in hybrid or cloud-hosted environments.
• Familiarity with replication technologies, performance diagnostics tools, or enterprise data warehouse architectures.
• Exposure to automation scripting or database integration within CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience supporting enterprise system modernization, data migration, or database refactoring initiatives.
• Relevant database or cloud platform certifications preferred but not required.
EDUCATION:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
CLEARANCE:
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
